I just tested for the first time. I’m not entirely sure I did everything correctly, if I missed doing a test, or even what the total picture means. The pool does look a tad cloudy. I appreciate any thoughts you guys have. The previous owner told us his pool maintenance schedule is to put 4 chlorine pucks in the little round holder, by the pump, that has water running through it once a week. We have been doing that, but something tells me there is more to it than that. I still don’t know how many gallons our pool is. I’ll work on that tomorrow. Thanks guys!

Your numbers look good ( need a little tweaking ) except for your CYA. If they had been using pucks I would expect it to be high.
Are you sure it’s at zero?
Thank you for your help! I put the mixture in until I couldn’t see the black dot and it never got to the lines that would let me get a reading. I’ll retest right now.

Just retested. I’m probably doing it wrong, but it’s still a very small amount of liquid before I can’t see the black dot.

That means your CYA is off the scale high, which is what Mark guessed. Try repeating the test with 50% pool water mixed with 50% tap water. Then multiply the resulting reading by 2.

Good idea. I’m feeling like a chemist, a poor chemist though.
I did the 1/2 and 1/2 and it still isn’t high enough to register. I assume that means I’m way out of whack?

Simply, pool water to the bottom of the label then tap water to the top of label. Then mix well and pour off to the level of the bottom of label and then fill back to top of label with the reagent. Your result get divided by 2.

Try 1 part pool water to 3 parts tap water and multiple the result by 4.

It came out to be 400. I assume that means I need a water change.
Do you prefer I make a new post about getting it down, or is here ok?

Instead of draining and refilling the pool, is it possible to throw a water hose in there and let it exchange the water on its own? It has an automatic refill and drain. One concern I have is that the overflow pipe is buried underground and drains into our pond and creek that is full of amazing wildlife that I don’t want to hurt.
Thoughts?

You can plug the overflow and use a submersible pump for the water output.
We have 10 acres on a hill. They designed the entire property to drain into the pond that wraps around the place. Ugh, maybe I could figure out a way to disperse it and let it soak into the ground instead of run down the hill. I just took a picture. It’s dark outside, but you can see that the pool fence ends and a few feet later, the pond begins.

You can, but it will take much more water this way as you will be draining new water along with the old. Are you on a well?

We are not on a well. We are on what they call municipal water. Super cheap and great water pressure. I’m not sure if the overflow can drain as fast as I can put it in? Does that sound right? What do you think?
