Intex 2800GPH 14Inch Sand Filter Pump & Sand in Pool

Well.. I did find this in the amazon reviews for this pump where some ppl are complaining about the sand issue -

"Sand in pool check your laterals for tighteness!
By Amazon Customer on August 4, 2020First off Intex I'm ******! I GET THIS NEW FANCY PUMP! What happens......it starts putting sand in my pool. Every day I'm getting in the pool and putting my goggles on and tediously vacuuming the entire pool. The sand is all over the place. So I start researching and people talk about broken laterals and bad seals etc etc etc. So I check all seals before taking out my bran new sand. Doesn't fix it. I read that my Aqua Quartz sand is to fine for Intex even though it's #20 Silica sand. So next I remove sand, inspect lateral and it looks perfect, This time I try a less expensive QUICKRETE pool sand that does indeed look larger in grain. Next morning still sand all over the pool. I have backwashed all the sand to heck and back so don't worry there. You can bathe in my sand it's that clean! So I go by Leslie Pool Supply because I hear that 20/40 sand like Quickrete will also cause you issues. I mean come on Intex how finicky can your pump be? I inspect Leslie's Puruvian dream spectacular tubular brand sand and what do you know it looks like Quickrete has a deal with Leslie's Pool Supply to package the same sand in Leslie pool Supply logo and it's sold for 7 dollars more. Now I keep hearing lateral....lateral in my head so this time I inspect that lateral with a microscope...in fact I took the dam thing apart. Oh Intex you great destroyer of all things fun guess what I found??? **** I found that your weak handed assembler of your pump did not tighten each plastic end of the lateral all the way... Being that the sand is pretty fine I could see in each area where you screw the little plastic piece into the lateral that has the little filter grate to keep sand out. The sand was getting through each lateral insert. ***So in short had your employee done their job I would have had a minimum of 10-20 hours of my time spent floating in my pool instead of cleaning and trouble shooting. Quality control people and fire any mployee without the proper hand strength to do the job right. Again the issue was the little plastic deals at the end of the lateral...there are like 8 or so of them. see less

So, since I have two of the sand barrels now - I may shop vac the one not in use (get all the sand out) and check the laterals on that barrel..

So.. I did what the amazon reviewer did - I checked my laterals - half of them were 50% loose... some were 25% but all were lose .. I had to hand tighten them all after sucking out the sand with shop vac, then replaced the barrel with the same sand, but tightened up laterals - now running pump and we will see what happens. If you buy any pump/barrel always check laterals are tight - especially Intex since this seems to be a known issue.

OH MY! Lessons learned by all here! Thanks for that follow up and let me know how it goes please so I can pass this lesson on to others!
I will - It's been 2 hours of filtering and I can't see any sand, but even if I still have some sand issues - if it turns out that way - laterals most def need to be inserted all the way in, tight and flush. Mine were not and I'm sure sand was getting in because of it - I mean 50%.. untightened, hanging on by a few threads.. I'm going to suck the sand out of the replacement intex pump/barrel they sent me that was also throwing sand and I won't be surprised if the laterals are loose there too..

I often get a few tablespoons after backwashing. used to drive me crazy but the auto cleaner gets it up and I quit worring about it, doesn't add up to much over the season.
Yeah - if it's a small amount and not for any serious reason and sand doesn't cost a ridiculous amount I won't have any issues either. I'll just sweep it up. I'm still getting a little myself, but no where near what I was getting with those loose laterals - and since I have two of the same sand sand barrels/pumps from intex and I have a different sand in the other barrel I'm going to tighten the lats on that one too and then try that different sand and see if it's even better. Although the sand I'm getting now is no where near the jet like it was before I tightened lats - its on the opposite side of the pool..

Update:

After tightening lats and seeing less sand I decided to try a new brand of sand - (I have two of these pumps, so two sand barrels) AFTER I filled the back up barrel with the new brand of sand I noticed the 6way valve on the in use pump was damaged on the bottom that sits in the sand barrel with cracks and holes. Thankfully I have 2 of these pumps and the other valve appears solid. So I'm going to try this new sand in the back up barrel with working 6 way valve and if that doesn't solve it, I'll go back to the old sand in primary barrel with the working 6 way valve.

Sand in primary that I was using with the busted valve is Fairmount Santrol Aquaquarts and Palmetto is the alternative brand I'm trying now with working valve. I'll report back later when I've tried both sands with the functioning 6 way valve.
