Elevated water return

I built this PVC return because I thought it might get me better flow. It splashes/aerates the water pretty good. Will there be any ill effects? More chlorine use maybe? The stock returns are always under the water line, though I’m not sure why.

Thanks for any advice.

Be aware that using the 1-1/2" opening for the pump inlet might be/is a safety hazard. That explains why the pool has two 1-1/4" inlets that tee. That said, I have similarly defeated the two-inlet safety feature. So make sure that your situation can tolerate having such a hazard.

I have a very similar setup. The return up like this will not "churn" up the water thus garbage will settle on the floor of the pool. My return has a 1 inch eye and I can feel the stream at 9 feet away. I am contemplating running a venturi style to push the water down even further hoping to make the water move even more. I also put in a fountain that can be turned on and off to achieve your same effect.
