Good evening everyone. I bought my house last year March and it has a 20'x40' pool ranging from 4ft to 10ft deep. Gunite pool, 2 skimmers on the side, 3 returns in the pool, bottom main drain, vacuum port on skimmer wall, tile at water line only. 300lb Hayward sand filter, 2.5hp pump (brand new) I don't recall brand at the moment. 2 submerged wall lights (one is missing and I have putty sealed the wiring holes for the time being until I can replace it.) Lights on opposite wall of skimmer/vacuum port, water slide on same side as lights, diving board in deep end.

This pool is a beautiful thing for my wife and kids, for me it has been a money pit and a nightmare... pure nightmare. Replaced the sand, brand new vertical assembly in filter, brand new hosing and seals for the water slide (completely rebuilt it besides the prefab slide itself), rerun more than 30 ft of plumbing (quick patch will need to replace all of it when the proper equipment is available at supply store), have a leak in the plumbing of shallow end skimmer somewhere under deck, manual vacuum line has a leak and I keep it capped unless actively using it. Replaced the pump because the internal fan was shattered, capacitor was bad, housing was rotted under capacitor, viewing window was cracked.

I go into the pool store and get my water tested regularly and every single time its "buy this $250+ amount of chemicals, add this, reduce this, treat with this, come back test water and do it all again". The pool store is bleeding me dry and my water looks awful. Currently it is a hazy, nearly milky looking, color and no amount of shock, algecide, muratic acid, alkalizer, and the most recent nightmare of flocculent, is helping to clear the water or make it feel comfortable enough to even swim in.

I do not have an at home TF-100 (I think is what it's called) nor do I know how to use it. I have been reading this website for several days and am learning that I am pretty much beating a dead horse by going to the pool store all the time. Nothings changing except my wallet draining.

I am an open book, willing to learn, ready to implement proper guidance and prepared to finally swim with my family. If someone can please provide some resources to teach me how to be a happy pool owner and not prepare myself to learn how to play tennis in the backyard instead.

I have spent nearly $600 since 12 May. 2022 trying to just get my pool swimmable. Attached are a couple photos of my pool the white circle is where the leak in the skimmer and/or vacuum line is at (99% positive due to deck falling and low pressure to the skimmer on right. I lose about an inch of water every 5 days but only when the pump is on. It may be in the return as well, not positive), first 2 pictures are of the test reselt and recommendation from 5/26 and the last 2 are of the result and recommendations of the follow up test on 5/28. Following all guidance, My water is still cloudy/milky, it smells like 'pool' it is very hard on the skin and I feel I have done nothing but waste weeks of time and money.

Please help!!

Welcome to TFP!!!!

I am "Pool Stored." I was taken for $thousands by the pool store. I exist for the same reason you are frustrated. Do this:

1) Fill out your signature.
2) Download PoolMath and setup your pool. Use "Effects of adding" and add 5ppm of liquid chlorine daily until your test kit arrives. Add nothing else!!! Depending on how you used clarifier and flocculant, we may need to clean your filter or replace sand. Can you explain EXACTLY what you added, and how you handled your filter?
3) Order this if you have a salt water chlorine generator:
4) If you have been using pucks, or liquid chlorine, order this:
5) Share your logs. In Pool math, click the gear in the upper right. Scroll to the bottom and "Link from TroubleFreePool.comuser profile.
6) Read up --> SLAM Process This will be your next step after your test kit arrives.

Welcome to TFP!!!

I’m sorry for all your troubles. Parts of bad on old pool and to that there is not much that can be done. Some folks here might be able to help you with ideas and suggestions, but I’d you need to replace a pump you need to replace the pump and ideas and suggestions only go so far.

I go into the pool store and get my water tested regularly and every single time its "buy this $250+ amount of chemicals, add this, reduce this, treat with this, come back test water and do it all again". I’m also sorry you were pool stored.

The one slightly more costly thing you are going to absolutely need is a test kit. As you read we recommended either the TF-100 or the Taylor K-2006C. Both uses Taylor reagents, but the TF-100 is quite more affordable.

Once we get the kit we can help you out with the testing.

And I will stop here because @PoolStored beat to it.

If you need proof. Pictures of my pool are in there. TFP is a lifesaver!!!!

I'm new as well but i can call some folks who can help fae better than i. Just know you aren't the first who has been at wits end with a cloudy pool. Couple things to start, order the tf100 or Taylor 2006c test kit now, Download the pool math app, and fill out your signature. Calling @JoyfulNoise , @Newdude, @Mdragger88

We got you!

Baquacil Flocculant, I put 10oz total into the skimmers directly 5oz in each skimmer as directed. I read the bottle, realized I had to set to recirculate on filter (20-30 mins after putting in skimmers). Got panicked, read a ton online and realized I really messed up. I backwashed to clear, rinsed, backwashed, rinsed, backwashed, rinsed, set to recirculate and shut off my pump. Flocculant had been in about 45 minutes at this time. After it sat without the pump running for 18 hours, no change in haze or significant build up on bottom of pool (no more than what there was already). Set pump to waste, used 11 inch triangular manual vacuum with hose to wall and started at the stairs and worked my way down to the shallow floor and slowly moved across the pool and finished in deep end. Backwashed, rinsed, set to filter after manual vac, around 4pm today, but shut pump off and have not resumed it. Sand was replaced last March, it does unfortunately feel a slight bit sticky. Kept pump off because I did not want to burn it up or damage anything as I just replaced the entire pump, sand and internals for the filter.

Updated my signature with details... need to add to signature I am on well water.

Is your pool on Baquacil? That is on another Ball Game!
As in the manufacturer of the chemicals that I use? I did have an auto chlorinator that was in the pump house but I cut it out because it was rusted through and the wiring was dry rotted and leaked excessively in the pump house. The manufacturer of the flocculant I used was baquacil though.

All other products appear to be manufactured by Poolife, ie: Shock, NST Tabs. I did use BioDex Skill-IT algecidal as well on Friday.

When you bought the house, did the previous owners tell you what type of chemical pool they had? Or did they leave any chemicals for you?
Our confusion here is whether you have a Bacquacil chemically treated pool, or a Chlorine treated pool. Entirely different and not interchangeable.

Okay, I just Googled the SDS on Bacqua FLOC..... its just aluminum, same as other brands. <Whew!>

Soooo.... that's the only Bacqua product you've used, right?? If so, its just the annoying product the same as we avoid anyhow. Its an annoyance to try to get out of the pool and we rarely (like almost never) suggest folks use it.

Well, I reached out to the listing agent because the previous owners numbers have changed. They sent me a lost of chemicals previously used. Contacted the pool supply store (I use the same store that they used to open/close the pool each year) and they confirmed the list:
- Baquacil - Calcium Hardness
- Doheny's- Chlorine Neutralizer
-Doheny's - Auto Chlorinator (removed)
-Aquabrite - pH Minus
-Doheny's - pH Minus
-Baquacil - Total Alkalinity
-Chlorox - Turbo Schock, 3 stage
-Poolife - NST Extended Release Chlorine Tablets
-Poolife - 3" Cleaning Tablets, Stabilized Chlorinator
-Baquacil - Sanitzer and Algistat
-Poolife - Turbo Shock
-Muriatic Acid
-Bio-Dex - Skill-IT Algecidal

These are all the items on the last 3 years purchase list from the pool store. Since I moved into the house in March 2021 I have not used any Baquacil except for the Flocculant and this weekend the Alkalinity that I used was apparently Baquacil. Could this explain the balancing nightmare and the constant eb and flow of the pools condition since last year? I threw away everything that was left behind when I moved in (they left most of it in the wood line with mixed trash and plumbing scraps. The chemicals containers were sun bleached so I did not use what I could not read). I have been using the same pool supply as the previous owner, but if I trusted them I would not have found my way here and thankfully I did.

Hope this sheds some light.

Did you order the test kit?
I have not made a purchase yet, was looking through what's available and what they come with. There are a lot of options for this kits all coming with the same basics and some slightly different extras. Not sure what is absolutely needed and what parts are considered 'specialty' or even unnecessary. Have never tested my own water except with some test strips.

Re: Test Kits- MUST have the FAS-DPD test for high Free Chlorine (FC) and Combined Chloramines (CC).
Speed Stir type device very, very nice to have.... especially so the device will do the mixing while you add drops of reagent. Otherwise one hand swirls to mix while the other is adding reagent and it gets clumsy (for me, at least). Once you use it you never go back to not having one.

Re: That list of chemicals.... wow. I can't imagine how much all that cost. Much was a waste of time. We never use most of that stuff and never need to.

Let me look up some of that Bacqua branded stuff. I have no idea why they mixed stuff up like that.....and what it means to you?

For the test kit capability at a minimum you would need:

FAS DPD chlorine test
Combined chlorine
Ph
Total alkalinity
Calcium
Cyuaranic Acid (CYA)

Optional would be
Smart stir (though its highly recommended)
Salt (you would need it if you had a salt water pool)
Total dissolved solids
Phosphates
Borates
I would recommend the TF100 as a minimum. I would also add the smart stir. It makes life so much easier.

3) Order this if you have a salt water chlorine generator:
4) If you have been using pucks, or liquid chlorine, order this:
I am looking at the differences between these 2 and curious which I should buy right now. Currently we are using pucks in the pool but my wife and I have committed to transitioning to a SWG by summer 2023. I have to make some much needed repairs and fixes to the pools plumbing before I convert anything, previous owner left me with a headache of improper repairs done. Anyhow, the test kits seem to be the same except the SWG kit has a few extra tests/features specific to salt water systems. If I order the SWG kit will I be able to use it without running those (appears to be 2 tests) until I convert? Do I need to buy the TF100 now since using pucks and next year purchase the SWG TF100 kit?

Trying to make that transition as inexpensive and easy as possible.

Thank you to everyone on here for sharing your knowledge and expertise as well as for being kind. I was 100% at the point where a cement truck or a couple of boom sticks were a near future purchase. It's been exhausting but I had to laugh because last night I actually dreamt about the pool and being happy with it. I will try to use the search features before asking questions because the forum has a plethora of information and thankfully a lot of people just like me 😀
