Lost my solid cover so last fall I used a mesh and some pool pillows to cover the pool in NJ, Last Sunday with great difficulty pulled off the mesh cover with tons of wet leaves and very brown water, since Monday I have had the following
FC =.26
TC= 1.73
PH= 7.1
TA= 86
CH= 115
CYA= 5

the pump has been running continuesly, water is green currently, My free Chlorine has been Zero for the past 4 days despite shocking the pool every night, my own testing confirms Leslie's #s which are much more accurate. I started to raise the CYA tonight by adding the 4 LBS of conditioner, I added 10 lbs of calcium chloride to bring up the CH. Been brushing and backwashing as well for the past 4 days, my Polaris robot also is getting a workout and picking up sludge from the abyss. I added one gallon of Bleach to the pool tonight to see if the FC will be present in the morning tomorrow. once the CYA goes up I will shock the pool again
question is what should I do If the water does not clear up
 
Im a newbie here but I believe the instructions are to get good test kit and not rely on Leslie’s, and follow SLAM process. Also I don’t know what kind of robot you have but mine wouldn’t be all that useful getting tons of organic matter off the bottom of the pool. I think you’d want to skim or vacuum that out.

No way pool store numbers are more accurate than a good test kit.

@Flying Tivo is correct, the ole tried and true SLAM is the way to get that water to TFP clear!

sorry, that one made me chuckle. Pool stores do not test as a courtesy, they do it to sell you a bunch of garbage you wont need. Looks like with your situation, you will need a lot of liquid chlorine/bleach to get the SLAM going. At a minimum, right now you want to be adding a gallon a day to get some chlorine in there and minimize any new growth. To get going on the SLAM, you want to get the CYA to 30 so the process is more manageable, your SLAM chlorine will then need to be 12. I've seen green pools get to clear in no time with the right test kit and a good SLAM

Nope. Leslie’s gives you a higher level of precision, ie to a few decimal places. The numbers aren’t accurate though, they are just inaccurate with more precision ;)

They do this to make you think their numbers and computer is great and should be trusted…. It shouldn’t. And you don’t need that level of precision anyway. Nearest whole number FC is more than good enough.

I am waiting for the CYA to come up, this morning the CYA was still very low, Now it is raining here so I turned OFF the pool pump, I check CYA again, tonight. from experience in my pool, each gallon of bleach brings it up to 4 PPM in my 20000-gallon pool, so I need 3 gallons each time to SALAM it. two photos, one from last Monday, Brown water, and one from yesterday, Green, its getting better by the day but not by much
