The other day I found a large (American robin size) dead bird in my skimmer basket. There were no visible signs of trauma. I've only had a pool for 7 years, but I've never seen a dead bird in the pool before. It's unlikely to have happened during the day as I would have seen it. I look out the kitchen window at the pool several times a day as I'm grabbing food or gettling a glass of water. Has anyone else seen this? I'm wondering what might cause it.

Maybe it was injured, sick, dropped off by a neighborhood cat? I've had frogs, toads, skunks, chipmunks in my skimmer before....but not a bird!
I had one once and I think he flew in and couldn't get out. While i had a stupid amount of oaks on the property, the immediate area around the pool was clear (and fenced). Unless he had a heart attack while flying over the pool, he entered the skimmer on his own accord.
Now. Mice, moles, etc ? Yeah. They ran across the patio and fell in to drown. Then the skimmer skimmed.

I've had a few baby birds, never an adult. Make sure to check your chlorine. Depending on how long it was in there dead animals can really "eat" the chlorine.
