So the local pool store closes and opens my pool every year and has for many many years. I've lived in the house for 5 years. I don't even look at the pool stuff in the winter. Last year, I saw a post about deep cleaning the filter but my pool was already open. It's closed now for the next couple weeks only and so I guess I should do it. I went to look at it and and I saw my filter was set to "recirc" instead of "closed." is that ok? and, do I just try to open the filter as it currently is? thanks for the help.

Normally the handle is placed in between position settings if they choose not to use the closed setting. Hopefully your MPV will operate fine when you depress it and try to move it. If you do attempt the deep clean, take caution removing the top. Also take care when pushing the garden hose downward into the filter to avoid damaging the laterals at the bottom. Take your time. Good luck!

so I don't need to be concerned that it's on recirc for opening the filter? And when you say take caution removing the top, what exactly does that mean?

I think you have a side-mount correct? So in your case it would be good to place the MPV in closed so that when you fill the filter with water it can actually go up & out of the top and not out the side ports. You could probably also place the MPV on backwash and the deep clean might push water out the side port, but if you did that I suspect you would miss cleaning the sand in the filter above the MPV. Make sense?

Just age. Hard to tell from the pic, but plastic parts tend to get worn and brittle over the years. Nothing worse than trying to remove a part only to have it break mid-way into the process. :brickwall:

I'm sorry I don't know what side mount means. I don't do much with this stuff. lol

Ha ha. MPVs are either located on top of the filter or off to the side. Your filter seems to have only an access port (cap) on top with the MPV mounted to the side of the vessel.
