I know that if your clean pressure rises, it's time for a deep clean. What if it doesn't, but has been over a year since you did? My clean pressure is the same as the day I installed it, but it's been a year since it was disassembled and throughly cleaned out.

Time to clean it, or let it be until clean pressure rises?

Thanks in advance!

Jim,

I recommend opening and cleaning DE filters once a year. How often do you backwash?

I have a couple of rent house pools with DE filters and I never backwash anymore. I just open and clean the filter twice a year.

Thanks,

Jim R.

Ok, thanks. I don’t backwash very often…skimmer socks keep the filter clean for awhile.

Jim,

In the big picture, if your filter pressure never goes up, you don't "have to" clean your filter once a year, if you don't want to... I just think it is a good idea.

If you want to let it go longer, nothing major is going to happen... I just find that it is better for me to clean my filters on a schedule.. If I wait too long, and the filter pressure goes up, it will be on a weekend when it's 20 below, all the stores will be closed, and I'll be out of DE, or the giant O-ring will be bad. I'd rather do it when I want, then wait for the filter to tell me when do it.

Thanks,

Jim R.

You might consider adding a flow meter to your system. When the equipment pad has low head loss, especially when you have an oversized filter, it’s often hard to detect changes to your filter loading based on pressure. The dial pressure gauges on most filter are not very sensitive. A flow meter should show a more detectable drop with loading.
