You could try to add a thin layer of poly fill (pillow stuffing) over the rake. Only problem is you have to go really slow or else you’ll just push the water in front of the net.

Maybe an old t shirt, panty hose, the fiberglass filter material from a cheap air filter
Put a filter sock in the skimmer and turn up the pump speed.

I use these and the silt one (white) works great for small stuff that gets in the pool. Perhaps kinda pricey, but there’s a lifetime warranty.

Your question wasn't what do you guys in the industry do. Since I'm servicing my pool and not in a rush, using the skimmer to skim works for me.
