Hayward pumps dying

I have had my pool for 2 months now and the Hayward 2.7 HP variable speed pump has died twice. Each pump lasting about a month. Apparently a circuit board on the pump fails. Is this a known issue with the Haward 2.7 pump or possibly some other issue causing the pumps to fail?

Thanks for any advise.

Hard to believe that you have had the same failure mode both times. That points to your setup more than a defective product. Defective product is still certainly possible but less likely.

Do you get a lot of lightening where you are or power surges? How is your pump wired up? A better shot of your equipment pad and a description of your wiring would help.

VSP’s are extremely sensitive to power surges and lightening strikes. If the control board got fried somewhere, especially on the power input side of circuitry, then a surge is highly likely. Either way, no matter what the cause is, TFP always recommends that a pool equipment load center be installed with a surge protective device (SPD) to prevent against equipment damage. Panel mounted SPDs cost about $120 which is cheap insurance for a pump that costs nearly $1000.

Once you figure it out, it is highly recommended you install one.

I have a whole house surge protector at the meter provided by the power company. Since closing on the home in November we have had very little lightning or stormy weather.

The EcoStar has had some drive problems in the past. But the TriStar has not had the same issues so that part is new.

Have you been running the pump on full speed often?

What is the normal filter pressure and RPM?

Given the time frame, a warranty request is in order.

No the pump runs at 60% 9-5 daily.
I had the installer come out yesterday. On the Hayward pump there are a set of dip switches that need to be off. He checked and the were so he turned the power off for 2-3 minutes and the pump ran all day. Apparently if you don't leave the power off long enough the new setting will not be configured. So far good news. Thanks for the help.
