Here's another weird FPH issue. These are identical union fittings, 1.5" slip according to the manual. Doing a dry fit test, the bottom one is clearly the right size. A piece of 1.5" pipe goes in with resistance. It's definitely a tight fit, which is what you want (full contact for the cement).

The top one is nominally the same size, and has the same markings on the body. But the dry fit is loose. The same pipe goes in and out with no resistance and doesn't fully contact the fitting. I'm afraid that if I cement this, it will not form a proper seal.

Is this a typical issue, something with an easy workaround, or is it likely a manufacturing defect on this fitting?

As a fallback: the outside of the union seems to fit tightly (VERY tightly) into a 2" coupling. It's probably meant to be a hybrid 1.5/2" union, like the Haywards. So I could plumb this section in 2" if necessary.

Also I made the video using a little piece of scrap flex because that's what I had handy, but I tried earlier with a longer piece of straight pipe and it was exactly the same.

All you need is the part at the red arrow.

The company will probably send you a new part or tell you what the part number is as is is just a standard union.

Is the part at the black arrow glued or threaded?

Does the union have a part number on it anywhere?

Yeah the back part is glued in so I'd have to just replace the screw-on part with a matching one. There's only one marking anywhere on it (see picture).

Unfortunately my installation is scheduled for Friday so I don't have time for them to send me a new one. Does anyone recognize the shape of this thing, in case it's a brand I might be able to find locally? I only have Hayward unions here and the threading doesn't match. If not, I can make it work with the 2" for now, and redo this section later after getting a replacement. Scheduling the HVAC guy to come do the hookup has been IMPOSSIBLE so there's no way I'm putting it off.

Well the good news is: the union is made by Homewerks. I went to Home Depot today and found one easily, and it's a perfect match.

The bad news: like an idiot, I bought threaded instead of slip. Guess I'll be making another trip in the morning!
