My neighbor in NH has a old in-ground pool with a very old liner. The liner is likely 20+ years old and is in remarkable shape considering, mostly just bleached-out. There is one significant issue, the liner has a major sag at the shallow end (about 3-1/2 feet deep) and has pulled from the coping track about two inches. Can a liner this old typically be reinstalled in the track and if so how much water would need to be removed and what process would be required? Is there another way to repair this? It seems to be mostly aesthetic, is it even worth repairing? There is a thin foam sheet directly behind the liner in this area and there is what appears to be a cement/plaster surface behind that.

In the past two summers, my older liner had at least 5 places including the tough corners that had very similar issues like what you posted. I found it much easier to pull the liner back in track in the vertical wall area. For the corners, my wife used a hair dryer to heat up the liner while I work from inside the pool to stretch the liner back in track. In the whole process, I didn't lower the pool water level at all. From my experience, I'd say your neighbor's issue would be easier to fix as it's not in the corner area. You'll find out the liner is rather elastic in hot weather or after the heat up with a hair dryer. Good luck.

Heat it up by pouring hot (boiling )water on it. It will get pliable enough to pop back into the track. I find it’s a lot easier to work from inside the pool then from the deck.

Thanks for the feedback guys. The water temp is still low 70s, I'll play with it in a month or so when the water is 80+. I'm thinking that it will be hard to get 2 inches of stretch without draining some water or maybe making a dam of some type. I'll have a better idea when the water warms. My biggest fear is tearing the liner but I'm less worried about that now that nobody has warned me about it.
