pool leak ,possibly skimmer?

The water stops dropping once level goes below skimmer opening .Upon looking inside skimmer throat, the base has two openings , one blocked with a wing nut , if i fill the "bowl" the water drops and goes down the open pipe presumably the pump inlet .Is this inlet pipe itself somehow connected to the deep drain as well as the pump?
I've dug down adjacent to the skimmer and can see no evidence of a leak, though i need to penetrate the concrete wall to fully investigate.

The 40 mm pipe opening to the right seemed abandoned and terminated in ground , full of dried dirt.
It seems regretfully im going to have to pull skimmer box out and no doubt damage further in process.Id just like to be 100% sure that the leak is at the skimmer pump inlet elbow and not some hidden mysterious junction somehow connected to the pool drain , hydrostatic valve at base of pool

Thanks , There is no visible sign in the pit i dug of any leakage and it definitely isnt leaking back into the pool nor via pump system to drain. .I thought of this idea .it must be leaking back into around the shell of the pool i have to dig or break concrete laterally another 14" to confirm this. Its a decent amount of water lost pool has been dropping 1" per day.
