Help - Black stains on my vinyl liner - not coming off! Fear it's Black Algae

Hi Everyone,

I'm brand new to pool ownership and we noticed that when we opened the pool for the first time, there were these black stains scattered around the bottom and sides of the pool. The pool is a salt water pool and has a vinyl liner about 7-8 years old (I've been told). The previous owners were very meticulous about everything, but this was the one thing we couldn't inspect due to the pool being closed when we purchased the home.

We've tried many stain removing solutions, and have struggled to keep our FC level up. We replaced our Salt Cell and it's been helping but we always get a low flow light on that and our air heater. The Pressure gauge on the DE filter looks good and I'm starting to get really discouraged.

The stains aren't changing (growing or reducing). We do live in a low area close to some wetlands and I believe underneath the liner is a sand base. My fear is that it's algae coming from behind the liner.

Any tips or suggestions? Is it safe to swim?

The pictures attached where before we replaced the salt cell and now the water is very clear.

Welcome to TFP.

Black algae is primary a problem in plaster pools. You probably have metal staining.

What test kit do you have?

Post your test results from your own test kit...

You should do a Overnight Chlorine Loss Test
