Do I need a Secondary Filter?

We have an in-ground pool approx. 51,000 liters.

The pool has two pipes leaving it (from the skimmer, and from the bottom of the pool) and two pipes going back to the pool (a set of jets on either side of the pool).

The plumbing (see attached) has a large filter (black) on one set of pipes which goes through a boiler. The other pipe bypasses the main filter and the boiler and goes through what I assume is supposed to be another smaller filter and then back to the pool.

That smaller filter case has never had anything in it since we bought the place. (5 yrs ago) It started to leak this spring and so I asked my pool store if they have a replacement (with filter) and they suggested I just install a straight pipe and skip it all together.

Just looking for a second opinion. Is this clear filter thing required? Should I replace it with a filter, or delete it from my system?

I would cut that out and pretend it never existed. What it once was is no more, IMO. Jandy Energy Filter.
