Family Members who own pools

I actually had a family member tell me that "There is NO WAY you can know more about taking care of a pool than my pool service. They are professionals!"
She actually said this as she was standing beside my crystal clear pool, complaining that hers turned green overnight.

Just for grins I googled "requirements to be a pool service professional in Alabama" It pulled up a job listing for a pool service tech. You may note there is no mention of a knowledge of chemistry required. Here are the requirements:

I was SO happy to have a pool and be able to finally talk ‘shop’ with all my friends with pools. I quickly learned that they never learned. At. All. Any points were countered with ‘yeah, well it only costs like $200 or $300 to fix mine everytime at the pool store’.

Or ‘my single speed pump costs me $100 a month to run but even though you showed me your readout that the your VS pump is pulling 120W, my single speed is still better’.

I quickly learned to just change the subject.

Some people will not trust anyone but an "expert." My mom is this way. You could show her undisputable proof of something and she'll still refute it because a "professional" told her something else. That professional could be a high school kid working part-time at home depot telling her to use the wrong fittings for plumbing and she won't let anyone tell her differently because "the guy at the store said...".

In the age of the internet, you can easily fact check pretty much anything and there's no excuse to not do your own research. Yet still, myths get perpetuated for decades by people who repeat things without fact checking them. They exist in every industry. I mean, how many have you guys seen in the pool industry? The pool store told my friend his water molecules were too saturated and would no longer hold any chemicals. I saw chemgeek dispute that here scientifically but there are people who would still repeat the nonsense because they "know" it to be true because someone else once told them it was.

Not a single one of my siblings own a pool. They think it’s too much trouble. So, they just come over to my house. So, I moved to Las Vegas to get away from them.

Not really, I moved here to be closer to the grandkids. However, my siblings are going to have to drive from Los Angeles to come swimming now!

Three things you don't bring up in public. Religion, politics, and pool care!
One of the first things another pool owner told me about was phosphates. "Without Phosphates, algae can't grow!" So much bad information out there.

I still have a bunch of the chemicals I should toss. Phosfree, blue liquid clarifiers, etc.

In that case , minus the company vehicle, I am a pool service professional 😄 i knew it !

Some people actually believe the fact they're getting charged a hefty fee is the biggest proof the company is good. These are all the same people when asked what's heavier "a pound of rocks or a pound of feathers" need a few minutes to think about it. They probably study for the typical urine test too.
