Is it possible to re-do pool decking without tons of debris going into the pool? What deck materials do you all recommend?

Good day TFP people!

Our pool deck has a Cool Deck coating installed back when the pool was built in 2001 (est. as I was not the owner of the house back then). 20 years later now, it is deteriorating in several places and is on my shortlist of things to replace in the next year or two.

I was thinking about the process of getting this stuff blasted off and then resurfaced - it made me realized that my pool is surely going to be filled with dust and debris unless they put some sort of cover on the pool first.

Has anyone here redone their Cool Deck before? What did the process look like, and how big of a mess should I expect?

On a related note - I'm open to any recommendations people have for pool deck materials to resurface with if anyone has any recommendations!

I live in AZ - so whatever the material it must be very light colored to stay as cool as possible in the summers.

If that cool deck has lasted 20 years I would go back with exactly the same stuff :)

Any kind of cover on the pool should stop anything from going in it.. the problem being how to secure it on the edges.. maybe a thin solar cover that is just a little bigger than your pool...

When I had some work done on my deck I floated a tarp over the water. It caught a lot of the debris and I was able to lift the debris out with the tarp every night after work was completed. Some slipped past but it made a big difference in how much cleanup there was in the pool.

We just redid our pool deck that had cool deck on it. The pool becomes a literal mess, but only took about 2 days of vacuuming and lots of chlorine and it was back to normal. The company didn’t cover the pool at all as they “said” that it becomes more messy and doesn’t stay put and you can’t run your pump if the pool
Is covered. Not sure if this is true. I’ll attach a pic showing how nasty the pool got.

oh wow interesting, thanks for sharing the pics. It looks like you had cool decking reapplied?

It’s similar to cool deck. Supposed to last longer. The cool deck out here (Palm Springs) doesn’t last long due to the heat and our water so most companies arnt applying it anymore. Honestly I was freaking out the whole time, and couldn’t wait for it to be over as we recently had our pool resurfaced and I was afraid they ruined everything. But everything turned out ok! We did run the robot as often as we could after they were done, as long as we were allowed to walk on the surface. And we netted as much as we could each night. If I ever have to do it again tho, do the deck before you do the pool!!! Lesson learned haha
