prevent sand from getting between liner and pool wall

Hi, Im looking for ways to prevent this from happening when I fix this damage. 2 yrs ago above ground pool was installed, it has been perfect. We just noticed a lot of little rusty bubbles on the outside of the wall, started to do some paint repair. We already know that we will be pulling back the liner to see the wall.I never expected my 50 yrs warranty pool would have this problem after just 2 years. There is also a lot of sand and water trapped between the wall and liner, you can feel it. When you swipe up the pool wall, it looks like mud coming out of little holes on the out side. I cant find any holes in the liner yet, there are some sharp feeling bumps. We also have 4-5 good sized divets on bottom, and one right on the cove. The pool was put on a sand base. Its on a slight incline, but its flat and was dug out. We have retainer walls with french drains around the high end. we us a pentair intellichlor SWG, that works so good, now I may stop using because of all the rust starting. Oh, BTW, the pool manufacturer is Swim n Play -went out of BZ, and the pool store owner would not even speak to us, and suggested it looked like fertilizer damage, well I dont use fertilizer. So, I am on my own. Any advise helpful.

Welcome to TFP! Sorry about your troubles. That stinks. Well, it sounds to me as if somewhere somehow water got behind that liner and that's never good. Can you post a picture of your pool set-up please so we can see everything? Any potential repair options will be driven by what we see such as access to liner, pool trim, decking/coping, etc. I'll tag a couple of our AGP folks as well for their advice. Good luck!

got 3 seasons out of it. finally took it apart. rusty holes mostly just in the top part, but i'm sure they are making their way down. The inside only has rust on the upper part too. can't even find a replacement wall in stock online. 24'x48". If anyone hears of one send me a note. Is this worth a repair by riveting some aluminum panels around the bad sections?..IF i could find some.

the sales person at the pool store said yes it was for salt..then last year when I sent them pics of the rusty bubbles coming out- the owner emailed me, they changed their tune saying they would never have recommended salt for above ground-and Then he proceeded to blame it on fertilizer.

Just looked up some BBB complaints on Swim n Play. They have a history of similar rust issues and not honoring the warranty, so it sounds like it doesn't matter that they went out of business, you would still be stuck with a rusty pool. While you have it apart clean up all the rust you can. Since the rust is at the waterline you could probably use gorilla tape on the inside wall and bondo on the outside wall to cover the holes. Coat the inner and outter surface of the wall with rust proofing and paint the outside if you want.

I had an above ground salt pool for years and battled rust issues after the 1st year.

It would appear that you are not going to get anything from the pool company or the manufacturer, so this lands in your lap to fix. I think zea3 hit the nail on the head. I would sand, bondo, paint the exterior and also cover the inside with something where the rust is showing. So maybe sand and paint inside then cover with a layer of tape.

The outside will likely be an annual paint or at the very least touch up paint. The salt water just eats metal at an alarming rate.

One of the issues with above ground steel wall pools is that they sweat! Certain times of the year you will see a lot of condensation on the wall of the pool. I believe that condensation also forms between the wall and the liner, and that is where rust issues start.

thanks for helping. correct, we are on our own here..i stopped using the SWG last summer after finding all that out, but there was still salt left in the pool.. anyone out there need to buy a used one? We are definitely considering a patch up job, since we can't find any replacement wall. i am concerned with the 2-3 sections that have the most holes, the rest of the pool is not as bad. maybe it's the shady side.
