Cracked chlorinator - which way to turn the fittings?

Yes I did it. A bit of ice in Hayward cl200 chlorinator I missed and I started the pump resulting in a cracked chlorinator.
I've got one on order.

My question: regarding the fitting in the yellow square, to loosen turn left or right? The fitting shown is the output side. There is also a fitting just like it on the back for the input side.

Opinions?

I turned it to my right and it is very tight. I don't want to get too rough with it and do more damage.

Any help is much appreciated!

It will undo in an anti-clockwise direction looking from the chlorinator back to the fitting.

All this stuff is the same and the same direction as comon bolts and nuts. If in doubt have a look at the fittings down at your local hardware.


If the fitting is glued or damaged by gently and patiently heating the pressure fitting it will come away from the pipe so a new one can be glued onto the pipe. I guess there are plenty of Utube clips showing how to do that.
 
I think that you have a CMP union.

The rotation shown in the picture with the arrow is backwards.
 
Looking towards the chlorinator, you unscrew counterclockwise.

Once you get it apart, you can unscrew the black parts from the chlorinator.

You can use 2 FTAs to make a bypass if you want to get rid of the chlorinator.

My humble apologies timeandscore, James is right, of cause.

Its a standard right hand thread but from your pic it looked like the locking nut came off over the black fitting towards the chlorinator. But it is like this where the nut slips off over the white pipe.

Your best off getting the right tool for the job. A strap wrench. Very handy to have when you have a pool and not expensive.

Another important point I notice is that its very wet and that looks like power going over the fitting on the chlorinator side. Water and power are a dangerous combination. I would wait till it’s dried out and ensure the power is off.
