Pool / Spa valve and heater installation

Well... my partner bought a house and the guy seems to have done everything the easy way instead of the right way. Nothing is labeled. He removed the spa heater because it died and was out of warranty, and I’m trying to install a new one back in now. My issue is that nothing is labeled and I’ve never owned a pool / spa combo, so I’d rather not screw up.

we have a Polaris cleaner plumbed inline in its own booster pump and timer, but the pool and spa run on one system together. I would like to close the spa loop to heat the spa only and install the heater on the closed spa loop. None of the valves are identified. I can tell where the inlet and outlet to the main pump and filter is, but am confused as to which of the remaining two valves i of. The right side of my system would help me turn off the waterfall in the spa and close my loop. Thoughts? Help??

1,

I hope you are not running the pump with the valves set like in your pics.. You have dead-headed your pump and there is no place for the water to go.

I'll post more in a minute..

You have two main valves..

The "Intake" valve, which is the one in front of your pump.. The Intake valve selects either the water from your pool (Skimmer and or the main drain) or the water from the drain in your Spa.. No way for me to know which pipe goes where.. I would "assume" the pipe on the right is the spa, but only you can tell for sure..

The "Return" valve which is the one right after your filter, sends the water back to your pool or back to your Spa. In your pics, this valve is set so that there is no water coming out of your filter. This is very bad.. Do not run your pump with the valve in that position!!!!!

The Return valve needs to have the words "closed" pointed to the left to shut off the pool and turn on your spa. If you point the Return valve to the right, the spa will be shut off and the Pool will be on.. The valve to the left of the Return valve is called you make-up valve and when in the pool mode, if you open the make-up valve a little it will allow a little water to go to the spa and cause it to overflow into your pool.

Thanks,

Jim R.

thanks Jim! I’ll look in depth at this later and ask if something else comes up. You guys seem to be better at this than me. And no worries, I wasn’t running the pool in the positions in the pic. I knew that was a dry position!
