Infinity Edge and pH

My pool is a Euro Edge (infinity) on all 4 sides of the pool in addition to having a large raised spa that has the same edge on all 4 sides. No matter how much I add to the pool within 2 days the pH will rise to 8.0 (or higher) using my Taylor Test Kit. I suspect this is due to the aeration that occurs due to the large amount of edge the water flows over. I have read that many pool owners with this edge are in the same boat and have to maintain their TA at 40-50 in order to stabilize the pH at 7.6-7.8. Otherwise they are constantly adding more and more chemicals. I am new to maintaining my pool so I am a bit concerned about operating the pool outside the suggested ranges. Does anyone have any thoughts on what I should be doing to not have to be constantly adjusting the pH or am I doomed to this due to the edge?

Eric,

As long as your TA is 50 or above you will be just fine.. With all that aeration, I suspect you will be working on your pH forever.

You might want to look into an Acid (MA) pump, like a Stenner...

Thanks,

Jim R.

Thanks so much for your response. One quick question, are you suggesting that as long as the TA is 50 or above I should just let it go and only adjust pH or should I get into the chemical wars with both TA and pH? Thanks for clarifying.

Eric,

We don't suggest that you ever adjust your TA just to get to some number, unless your TA goes below 50..

If your TA is above 50 and your pH is somewhat stable, just leave TA alone...

I would focus on adjusting pH and just keep an eye on your TA so that it does not go below 50.

Thanks,

Jim R.

First off, you can't open with that and not give us a few pictures. That sounds amazing!

I solved my acid-thirsty pool problem with a Pentair IntellipH. Like you, I have an IntelliChlor IC40. They work hand in hand (in fact, the IpH requires the presence of a Pentair IC). With the IC already installed, the IpH is a very simple DIY installation. They plug into each other. The only time I now handle muriatic acid is every other month or so to fill the IpH. Both my pH and TA are now very stable. And the IpH is as easy to adjust as the IC.

With all the aeration you're pool is getting, I suspect adding acid will be regular, ongoing maintenance task. If you ever tire of adding the acid manually, the IpH would be a great solution.

Full disclosure, as I exaggerated a bit: the IpH stops working when my IC does, due to cold water conditions. So I do have to add acid manually a few times a year during the winter. If where you live you can run your SWG all year-round, then your IpH will also work all year-round.

I apologize for my delinquency and thank you for your help. Here is a pic of the pool the only difference is that there are now ledge loungers instead of that old chaise! I really appreciate your thoughts.
