I have a Hayward sand filter ( S244T ) and it's sprung a leak. I am 99% any fix is a band-aid at best (patching from the inside would probably be best, but still a band-aid).

I am content with replacing it with the same exact filter (the cost of the tank looks to be almost as much as an entire new filter, may as well get a new multivalve with a complete new unit).

Pool is a 20 X 40 (~35K gals), pump is a 1-1/2 hp hayward super pump (just replaced the motor a couple of months ago). I use liquid chlorine and a stenner (really does make keeping the pool chlorinated correctly easy as long as i keep feeding it chlorine).

Seeing that i'm in it for a new filter looking for recommendations for possibly going DE. It would nice to have cleaner water (it's surprising how much you can see at night with a pool light on). Is there an advantage/disadvantage to a bump vs backwash DE filter? Any ones to stay away from? This filter is pretty low maintenance, so it would be nice if the next one was similar. When i backwash it goes out on the lawn (as long as the chlorine level in't to high, it's not an issue). If I were to backwash a DE lawn is that an issue for the lawn (there isn't any other discharge too, and I don't think the neighbor would like it either)?

You should put your MPV on RECIRCULATE or shut down the filter until it is replaced. The filter is a pressure vessel and if that crack blows it can cause major damage.

If you are happy with that filter then just get another one.

I thought of the recirculating on the way to work today. So I'll only filter when I am near it. Thanks for the tip anyway.

I have designed high pressure and temp valves, not really worried if the tank bursts, other than a mess and maybe loosing a pump seal and some water.

I have a Pentair FNS DE filter (60 sq ft) and love it. One item you need to consider is your plumbing. You may need to make some changes to fit a different brand of filter.
