A few questions

My husband and I bought our house this December, pool covered, closed and winterized, and then untouched for five years. We knew we had a challenge ahead of us. We opened up the beginning of this month to a swamp, and because we were scared we went to our local pool store and, well, got minimal help, minimal education and maximum bills. I have been doing deep and heavy research into trying to get this pool into shape and have started SLAM. My biggest problems are:

1. PINE TREES EVERYWHERE. Literally about 2 dozen surrounding the perimeter of my property. We cut them back and will be removing this fall. Any helpful hints about keeping the needles at bay would be wonderful.

2. Additional test kits. The testkit I bought is wonderful and quite fun to use, but I don't have a way to measure CYA. I've looked online for stand alone CYA kits and all I find are the "dot" testers where you get your level when the dot disappears. I have pretty bad vision and have horrid depth perception and I'm afraid I won't be able to read it correctly. Any other suggestions for testing CYA? Also, my chlorine tester doesn't go over ten. Is that high enough? It doesn't seem like it will be able to help me with my SLAM

3. The cover for the pool was a mesh kind that anchored into the ground, after freezing and thawing in Upstate NY it did not fair well and we will be replacing, buttttt, it also flaked a kabillion teensy greenish plastic bits into my pool. I have new filters coming in, the old filters are taxed out and literally need to be washed every hour because the jets lose about 90% of their strength after that time. . Should I floc to get rid of the green bits? I feel like my summer is half gone and we haven't made much progress.
4. I can get the pool to a cloudy dark blue but the second I brush it turns green black, PoolStore people said I should vacuum till I can see the bottom. Would it really be bad if I vacuumed to waste just to get the bulk of the Crud out? We have already manually scooped out as much as we can for not being able to see what we're going in at. The stuff that comes out is a black green muck. We also have sand/silt sandy stuff at the bottom of the filter when we take it out to wash them off.

I could go on and on. Honestly any advice is so appreciated.

pH was 7.2, FC 2-3, TC 3-5, TA 100, when I started slamming.

Dropped 5 gals of Superchlor in this evening, tested when I got out of work at 11 and my FC and TC we're beyond what my test kit can read so I guess that isn't super helpful, but I wanna give any info I have.

Thanks everyone.

Hi LooLoo! Welcome to the forum!
Unfortunately in order to do aSLAM Process properly you must know your cya & have a proper fas/dpd kit that tests fc over 10ppm. Without this information you are really just flying blind & so are we.

The cya turbidity test is the one u need & its the most accurate. It’s not too hard I promise 😊 & u can have another person look at it if u wish. its just a glance & either there’s a dot or not then u just look @ the water level on the outside of the tube to determine what level u r @
We recommend Taylor k-2006C or Tf-100 xl option these both contain every test u need.
SeeTest Kits Compared
The tf-100 with the xl option from tftestkits.net is the best value & has the most of the reagents u need to see your SLAM through & really good instructions.
They also have pretty quick shipping.

Until you get one of those you can just add 5ppm of liquid chlorine (calculate amounts w/ PoolMath ) daily to keep your pool from getting worse.
& NO FLOC that will just make your problems worse!

Since you have alot of organic material in the bottom that u can’t see you should try to scoop as much of it out as possible & also you may vac to waste if u have that setting. Just be sure to replace the water so your pump doesn’t run dry.

Later when there’s no solids/mud & u can see the bottom u can vac to filter.

When you’re test kit arrives run them all & post them here & we’ll be happy to help.
Until then you’re homework is to read ABCs of Pool Water Chemistry & SLAM Process in their entirety 😊

Thanks so much! I'm kicking my self for getting the cheaper testkit, obviously it's not gonna help in the long run and I'll have to bite the bullet and buy another, especially since it doesn't have a cya test either. Thanks for letting me know what I should at least add until I get the good kit in. I'll attach a pic of the plastic bits. I'm wondering if anyone else had to deal with this. It's the bright green in the photo. They're so so tiny. Smaller than a grain of rice and as thin as tissue paper.

For #1, we have a clump of 4 mature white pines 30 - 40 ft from the pool. And unfortunately they are north north west. Shed every time the wind blows. Skimmer socks work but you need to check them every day. Thinking about cutting those down. We have plenty of trees elsewhere.

Yes do like @Wobblerlorri said - it will be about $48 plus shipping & u will have a ton of reagent to get u thru your slam 👍🏻
When I posted earlier I didn’t realize u could get the cya complete kit on there but should have known they thought of everything 😊
As for your bits just let your skimmer do the work for u & use skimmer socks (check them frequently) - be sure u have your weir doors in place & your jets positioned well so u can get max skimming action.
I also saw a video where this girl made a very large skim net with some Fine screen & wood (like As wide as her pool) it made for quick work!

Well my friends, the hits keep coming. My brass nuts on the clamp assembly are stripped. Idk what happened. I've been opening and closing the filter without trouble or incident probably 2 to 4 times a day. I'm going to have to circulate my pool manually until the nuts come in. 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️
