Hi everyone - I have a 20x40' vinyl in-ground pool that was neglected for years before we bought this house. Opened up on May 1 and it was completely black...see horrendous "before."May1.jpg Didn't find this community until a couple weeks ago and we've been religiously SLAMming ever since - after we replaced the pump with a new Pentair SuperFlo VS 1.5HP. Bought and have been using the T100 test kit. This evening our FC is 8.5, CC is 0.5, pH is 7.2, TA 130, and CYA undetectable / 0. Tem is ~76. Water is crystal clear in the shallow end and just shy of crystal in the diving well. I'm still vacuuming what I assume are dead algae spots but they're getting smaller and fewer every day....just dead stuff that settled in the seams today.

Pool Math says we need 13 lb of granular stabilizer to raise CYA....obviously that won't dissolve in a sock! I *think* we're done with SLAM but wanted to ask! What next steps should we take? Thanks in advance!

You should have had about 30 CYA in there all along, so the chlorine would last longer during daylight hours.

I would continue the SLAM until you pass all three tests. That Overnight Chlorine Loss Test is critical. Somewhere - now or after the OCLT, add 30 CYA. Then be patient. Wait 3 days to retest CYA to be sure you hit the target and didn't go over from some residual. Then raise it to where you want it.

I have a 20X40 and needed 15 lbs of CYA this year. I donated 2 long sleeves from a t-shirt. Tied one end, filled with 1/4 of the CYA and tied the other end. I did 1/4 because it was cantaloupe like size and fit in the skimmer. 24 hours later it was good and mushy and dispersed by squeezing in the water within a few minutes. I have 2 skimmers so i repeated the process a second time with the 2 sleeves. I could have hung 4 off a pole across the pool if time was an issue but it was still cold out so i was in no rush.
