Question about Mustard Algae

Hello all,

First time poster. I've just joined TFP and have learned a lot from this website and its resources. This is my first pool and I have been taking care of it for a year and a half. I was taking my pool samples into a local pool store and having my water quality checked and following their recommendations. I've always had algae come and go that I am pretty sure is mustard algae. Long story short, after visiting this forum, I learned my CYA (103) was way to high for my FC levels. The pool store made no mention of it and no adjustment to my recommended FC levels. Needless to say I've switched over to a bleach diet for the pool and after a partial drain and refill I've lowered my CYA to 50. I've just finished my first SLAM. I passed the OCLT last night and have proceeded to raise my FC levels to 35 (recommended for mustard algae).

My current levels:

FC 35 (for 24 hours)
CC .2
pH 7.4
TA 139
CH 201
CYA 50

Taylor 2006C

Now to my questions:

1) I have a waterfall feature that flows into the pool. There has been some green stuff growing on the rocks. I notice that it is very important to brush the pool (behind lights, under ladders, etc). The rock waterfall makes it more complex and I can't really brush those spots. Will my mustard algae SLAM take care of the rock waterfall feature too?

2) The algae is very difficult to brush off my pebbletec in some spots. I have to take a very stiff brush and go at it by hand and it will finally come off. Is this a sign of mustard algae?

I am really hoping that this procedure works and gets rid of the mustard algae for good! This has not been a good pool ownership experience so far!

Thanks!

Welcome to TFP! About your questions:
1 - Ideally, water should've been flowing periodically, along with vigorous brushing, of the waterfall during the regular SLAM. The elevated MA level will help, but for only 24 hrs may/may not totally eradicate pre-existing algae. Just depends on how much there is.
2 - No doubt MA can be very stubborn. See link below.

I will note that of your K-2006 numbers, the TA and CH seem odd. Using the correct testing formulas, there's no way to get those results. TA should be in increments of 10 (i.e. 60, 70, 80, etc) and CH would be in increments of 25 (i.e. 250, 275, 300, etc). So verify your testing method next time. But for now focus on the algae (FC level).
'You have a gorgeous pool, but there are places for algae to hide. Make sure you checked behind the light niche (if installed), remove that umbrella and check inside the mounting hole, under the skimmer lids, drain cover if installed, and anywhere else algae can hide.

Let us know how it goes. Good luck!

Thank you for the welcome and for the info...I appreciate every piece of information I can get! You are right about the test numbers...I just received the Taylor 2006C a few days ago (before I did my initial SLAM). I just tested for FC, CC, and CYA. The other numbers are from the pool store test right after I did my partial drain/refill. I will perform a complete test with the 2006 when my FC drops back to normal range. I will remove the Umbrella and scrub in the hole and I'll try to remove the lights in the pool. Is it OK to enter the pool to removed and clean behind the lights with 35 FC? I'll scrub the waterfall rocks as best I can too...like you said there are a lot of places for the mustard algae to hide

Is it OK to enter the pool to removed and clean behind the lights with 35 FC?
No. I would wait until the FC drops to regular SLAM level or below. Shouldn't take long though. For the lights, only try to remove a light if it's the kind that has a hollow niche behind it. Small LED lights don't have a niche. Let us know how it goes.

To follow up...pool is crystal clear! I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the TFP method has done what I could not do in a year and a half battle with mustard algae! So far so good!

Just tested the water levels with my 2006C and I am at:

FC 7.0
CC .1
pH 7.4
TA 130 (still a work in progress)
CH 270
CYA 50

I'll try to keep my FC on the upper end of my recommended range for now. Thanks again for your help!
