Is a VS pump right for my situation?

My 1 1/2 HP Single Speed Pentair crapped out this week and looking to replace it, have heard the way to go is VS with the efficiency savings.

I have a fairly large pool (35k gal) and the equipment is below grade a bit from the pool with an average of about 50' distance from the skimmers and main drain (2" pipe). I don't currently have a flow meter installed, so is there a way to even calculate Feet of Head or is that even necessary to figure out?

My main concern is with the distance from the pool and being below grade, is that if I go with a VS pump (and spending 2-3x more) I may have to have it on a much higher RPM negating the benefit of a VS pump, and I'm not sure how to figure that out without buying one and installing it. And if I can go with VS, am I able to downsize the HP like what's generally recommended or will I need a higher HP to move the water from that distance?

I know without knowing all the data it's impossible to really know for sure but any guidance would be much appreciated!
 
The distance is not that far.

Being below grade makes no difference.

I would go with a variable speed pump.

I would suggest the Intelliflo 011028 or a Superflo vs.

Since you already have a SuperFlo, the new SuperFlo VS should fit the same unions and make installation relatively simple.

Unless you have anything like a heater, solar or waterfall, you can run very low speed and the power usage should be about 200 watts.

It looks like the Superflo VS is 1.5HP and the Intelliflo is 3HP, but it doesn't seem that HP matters much in VS if they're designed to and generally to run at a lower RPM. We don't have any water features or spa so our current 1.5HP was fine. I guess I'm wondering the reasoning someone would choose a larger HP motor if they all run lower?
 
The Superflo VS would probably be the best choice for you.

The Intelliflo works with Pentair automation, but the Superflo doesn't communicate with Pentair automation.

The Intelliflo is nice for higher flow applications because it can be run at a lower speed for the same flow, which is quieter.

since I JUST took these, they might help with your decision - I have Pentair VS pumps and the power savings from SMALL reductions in RPM is significant

The VS maxes out at 3400 rpm and lowest usable for us is about 800 rpm but we usually run 1100 or higher just to keep good flow.
Here the RPMs dropped only 600 and the power usage dropped in half.

I think at 3400 rpm ( full speed ) they use about 2500 watts - GUESS

Running 2200 rpm due to the storms here and wanting to turn over the water more frequently ...
