My wife suggested yesterday that I make a bowl for my parents for Christmas. Great idea! I went down to the shop and scared up a bunch of cutoffs. Cherry, Walnut, Maple, Poplar, Sapele and Wenge. Cut them all a little over 10" and 10" wide total and glued them up last night. This morning I went down and did a quick plane of both sides and turned out the below on the lathe. Probably was 4 hours total not including the glue-up. Finished in satin poly first coat is almost dry I'll do 4 coats.

Holy :poop:! PG, that’s friggen gorgeous!! I love mixed wood projects like that. I’m on the hunt for a new cutting board that looks good out on the counter, got anymore scraps laying around that you can whip together???

.......that looks good out on the counter
This was my thoughts about the bowl. It looks so good I would probably use it as my permanent centerpiece of my kitchen table for salt/pepper and whatnot. Bravo PoolGate.

Now you're giving me ideas. Maybe I will whip up a batch of cutting boards as board giveaways. I could literally make 10 of them in an evening. Hmm....

I'll just add this here! Just finished this up as a New Year's present for my SIL. Glued up a 12"x16" Sapele and Maple cutting board last night. My wife drew the pig and I cut it out. Routed the detail with a palm router. Finished in food safe mineral oil. The hold in the ear is for hanging.

That’s an awesome cutting board!!! Great hobby you have there. My godfather had a wood working shop in his finished basement. It was a tiny, cramped space but he did amazing work. He built his own pool table!! He was a bank VP by day (loan officer) and a wood working craftsman on his time off. He made my mom a beautiful sewing box that he hand-carved the details into (flowers and vines all around the base). That was like 40 years ago (he passed away a decade ago) and my mom still has the sewing box to this day. It will be passed on as a heirloom.
