New to the site and soon to be "first-time" pool owner in the Houston metro area. This site has been such a great resource for folks like me, who have no experience with pool design and maintenance. I've probably spent 20+ hours over the last 2 weeks reading the pool school articles and various threads on construction, sanitation, etc.. Still have a ton to read and learn. Thanks to all that contribute! Looking for a relaxing and enjoyable pool area to enjoy with my wife and 3 kids, ages 4-10.

About our project... still interviewing builders, and trying to decide what exactly we want in a pool - so this can/will likely change:
  • In-ground, gunite, geometric design with spa (7'x7' or 6'x9')
  • 33' length x 16.5' avg width
  • Depth - 3.5' to 6' or 4' to 6' - still trying decide on this, ~17K gal.
  • Sun shelf - 5' x 25' (approx) - with 2 or 3 bubblers
  • Asymmetric 18" raised beam wall with 60" scupper
  • PebbleSheen - color TBD
  • Coping - TBD
  • Decking - rock salt finish, concrete
  • Pump: Intelliflo VS
  • Filter: Clean & Clear Plus Cartridge
  • Heater: 400K BTU NG
  • Sanitation: spec'd Rainbow 320 Chlorinator, but leaning (strongly) towards Intellichlor SWG - curious on price difference upfront.
  • Automation: EasyTouch 8 - are there better options?
  • Lighting: 3 globrite in pool, 1 in spa
  • Cleaner: Still researching options here... spec'd Kreepy Krauly Platinum
  • Other - adding 14' x 18' pergola and outdoor kitchen
Still working through a lot of details and tweaking the design but wanted to get this out there to see if I was missing anything. The picture currently shows 6' sun shelf with 14' width on the pool, but we are thinking of going down to 5' to give us a 15' overall width on the pool. Planning for 2 of the upright style ledge lounger chairs, so could live with a 5' shelf. We would then change the spa to 7' x 7'. Planning to move and decrease the concrete pads in front of the pergola to the short side so they are not between the pool and the sitting area. Thoughts or suggestions?

Pentair now has IntelliCenter, it’s their latest automation product. My builder didn’t even charge me more vs his proposal to use EasyTouch. I love my IntelliCenter.

Hi Tj,
Welcome to TFP. Good on you for doing your research before it's too late. I can tell by your list of equipment and pool specs that you have. Not bad at all IMO.

I just have 2 comments. Well, maybe 3... awww what the heck. 4 comments!
1. Stay away of the Rainbow 320, and go with SWG system. If you do go with the Rainbow, you will eventually rue the day and ditch it anyway, so just save yourself the hassle now.

2. Size your SWG at least 1.5x the gallonage of your pool. So in your case, 40K. 2x is even better. That means your cell should last longer before it wears out

3. Go with the biggest filter you can, the bigger they are, the less you have to clean them. And you WILL eventually get tired of cleaning the buggers. Trust me on that.

4. And as important as any, add a TF100 Test Kit to your list. :)

011,

I too would go with the IntelliCenter, but no matter if you buy the EasyTouch, or the IntelliCenter, gut the one that comes with an integrated SWCG system.. It will just give you one less box to hang on the wall... Keep in mind that if you go with the EasyTouch, you will also need to get the ScreenLogic add on, if you want to be able to control things with your phone, PC or tablet...

Thanks,

Jim R.
