Need help with my test results. Brand spanking new pool owner here and I got my TF-100 Taylor kit yesterday!! Please bear with me as I will start from day #1 when pool was completed on 8/14. On day 1 that my pool was filled (8/14) it was clear but within a couple hours that the pump was turned on it went cloudy. I had only Aquachek test strips at the time so I used those and here were the results on 8/15:
Ph 8.4+
FC 0
TA 240
CYA 30-50

With the high pH I decided to add an entire gallon of 10° muriatic acid on 8/15. We were having pool school the next day and the guy said he’d bring chemicals so I left the rest alone.

When pool school instructor came on 8/16, these are the test strip results he got:
Ph 7.8
FC 0
TA 180
CYA 30-50

So he added the following chemicals:
1 lb bag of GLB Supersonic (calcium hypochlorite) and 12 lbs of GLB Stabilizer (cyanuric acid). We also turned on the “Super Chlorinate” function on the Hayward Super Plus for 24 hours.

The next day 8/17, the water is more clear but still a bit cloudy. That day's test results:
Ph 7.8
FC 10+
TA between 120 and 180
CYA 100.

From 8/18-8/21, the water remained a bit cloudy and I continued using test strips until my TF100 kit came in. On 8/18 I decided to turn off my SWG so it would not produce any more chlorine since it was so high. I also turned my VSP pump to be on all the time at 60% in hopes it would clean it better until the cloudiness is gone. The test strip continued to show FC at 10+ each day during that time period even with the SWG turned off!

Yesterday 8/21 my TF100 kit came in (woohoo!) and here were the results:
FC: 10.0
CC: 0.5
TC: 10.5
pH: 7.8
TA: 130
CH: 50
CYA: between 50-100 (per AquaChek test strip— my Taylor kit was missing the CYA view tube upon delivery but they are mailing me a new one!)
Bromine: 10

As I was finishing up the above test yesterday, the pool guy coincidentally popped by to pick up something he left at our house. I told him our results and he saw the water was still a bit cloudy so he added in 5oz Clarifier called "Natural Chemistry Clear". I did a overnight FC loss test last night and this morning (8/22) the FC only went down by 0.5ppm.

Why would my water still be a bit cloudy? Could it possibly be some clay dirt still suspended in the water from construction?

Adding clarifier was probably a mistake and could be causing issues with your sand filter. We don't recommend clarifiers or any other unnecessary "potions" typically used by pool stores and other so called "professionals". Until you have an accurate CYA reading, we won't know what your target FC level should be. Your PH reading will not be accurate when FC levels are over 10ppm. There should be other folks responding to your issues with additional recommendations, but for now you just need to keep filtering and making sure you have enough FC to kill algae. I'm not sure if your SWG is sized properly for a 24k gallon pool, so you may need to run the pump most of the day to maintain a high enough FC level. Have your read through Pool School?
