main drain cover and hydrostatic valve

Hi there,

I've drained my pool to try my hand at some plaster patching. as the water crept to the bottom I noticed that there was water coming into the pool which was probably a good thing. My questions are 1) has the hydrostatic valve been open in the last 3 years I've owned the pool (are they one way valves)? would the mass of water in a full or 3/4 full pool prevent inflow which then starts when pool water is pumped out? 2) I'd like to suck all of teh gunk out of there, how do I take teh cover off? i'd prefer not to break it. I don't know if it's threaded on or just pops off. There appears to be 2 little holes on each side. would they be for a wrench?

Pool is about 50 years old, gunnite. I've included a pic of it empty.

thank you!

Your hydrostatic valve is doing what it should. It should be a one way valve letting water into the shell if the outside pressure is greater than the inside pressure. There are youtube videos showing how to replace a hydrostatic valve.

@PoolguyinCT may have some ideas for removal.
