Hi! I bought a house with a pool a year ago (pool details in signature), and I have always had a problem with air bubbles in the pump basket and returns after I vacuum (pool has auto vacuum). The problem usually went away after a few hours... until yesterday. The problem has lasted 24 hours so far. The problem only occurs after vacuuming. I read similar TFP posts to troubleshoot with no luck.

1. If this continues, can the air bubbles break the pump? Should I turn off the pump and add liquid chlorine until it’s resolved?

2. Here’s my process for vacuuming: Turn on Automatic Vacuum valve (which also turns off the skimmer). Push vacuum hose into the water to push out all of the air. Insert vacuum hose into vacuum nozzle in the pool. Vacuum. Turn off valve to pump. Turn off pump. Open pump lid and clean out the pump basket. Replace basket and lid. Prime (which as I understand it is just adding water to the pump). Turn on pump. Turn off Automatic vacuum (which also turns on Skimmer). Bleed air from filter until water squirts out. Close filter nozzel. Am I doing anything wrong here that’s causing the problem?

3. Last year I replaced the o-rings in the filter and pump lid. I applied Magic Lube on both when I opened this year. I poured water over the valves, and the air bubbles continued. Pool water level is normal.

4. I timed the air bubble process. For 20 seconds the pump is full of water, filter psi is 10 (normal), but can hear the air bubbles coming out of the returns. Then for 2 min the pump is half full of water and LOUD, filter psi is 0, and salt generator says “No Flow”. And it continues to repeat.

And that sums up my knowledge. Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Welcome to TFP! Right here concerns me ....
Turn off valve to pump. Turn off pump.

You should turn off the pump before closing the valve to the vacuum. If you close the valve first with the pump still running, I'm thinking it will suck all the water out of the pipe. The other option is not turn off the pump at all and simply turn that 3-way valve quickly back to skimmer fully open. That's what I do. If you are still seeing large pockets of air in the pump basket after the pump has fully primed and been running for a short time ( say 30 secs or so), then you may have a suction side air leak at that valve or just before the pump that is allowing air to get in. But see if that makes sense and/or if the problem goes away or gets worse. We'll put our TFP heads together and try to help. :)

Thanks for the new tip! Would closing the vacuum valve before turning off the pump explain the air bubbles 24 hours later (they are still filling the pump basket and the salt generator shows “no flow”)? I would have thought that the air bubbles from vacuuming yesterday would have worked themselves out by now. And should I still leave my pump on (it runs 24/7) while it’s only half filled with water and bubbles?

To update, my problem was that the weir (flapper) door was stuck shut. As soon as I pushed it open, the pump and psi were back to normal. And of course I didn’t find the TFP article on suction side air leaks suggesting this solution until 3 days after researching, troubleshooting, and worrying. Glad for the free fix!

Alright! :goodjob:
