CYA went straight thru my filter and into my pool

I understand now that I should put the CYA in a sock and let it sit in my skimmer.

But when I followed the instructions on the stabilizer box and added it directly to my skimmer, it went through my pump system and the “crystals” shot straight into my pool.

This doesn’t make sense to me because it seems like it would have at least got trapped in the sand and dissolved over time?

I am worried there is no sand in my filter now!

Or am I just misunderstanding what I am seeing?

Hmm -- it should have been caught, at least most of it, in your sand filter.

Did you brush the granules around to get them dissolved. If they sit on your pool surface (is it plaster, vinyl, or fiberglass? - please update signature) it can stain the surface.

I did stir it around with a pool brush but they weren’t ready to dissolve. Vinyl liner. I’ll update my signature. Is this unusual for a sand filter? Makes me think everything that gets sucked in may be shooting back out.

DC, What is the pressure reading on your sand filter?

Chris

DC,

As Marty indicated this could stain your pool so I would sweep the crystals up and put them in a sock next time per TFP methodology. Do you have a basket strainer in your skimmer?

I just realized that I have two returns and there is a valve to turn one of them off by the pump. I have a return closer to the top of the pool wall that returns and stirs the water, and another lower return that shoots water straight out into the pool. I think that's where the CYA shot out thru. I just remembered that when we flocced the pool when we bought the house last July and vacuumed up everything that had dropped out, the dead algae shot straight back out into the pool (when the pump was set to waste) and so my father in law installed a valve to close that off. Any idea what the purpose of that second return would be? Or is it common for pools to have that?

Just an FYI - do not use Floc again. Also, if you circulated it through your sand filter, you most likely have compromised your sands filtering ability.

Sounds like a deep return for heating. It is still after the filter, right? Check the plumbing.

The extra line at the pump might be for a return cleaner, which is a cleaner that works from pump pressure.

A Jandy Ray Vac type cleaner works like that but there is usually an "Energy filter" near the pump. It's a small filter about the size of an oil filter.

Do you have a picture of the system?

Just sent the pic. Actually, there was a separate pump that operated an old vacuum. There are three returns total, but that third return (for the old vac) doesn't work unless I turn on the second pump (which I never do). If you are looking at the pic, the second pump is off to the left. The main pump is what has the two returns, lower one shooting debris (anything small enough to get through the pump basket) into the pool.

It looks like the multiport is not sealing correctly. The handle is not sitting right and there is a valve on the waste line, which usually means that the multiport was leaking.

I would suggest disassembling the valve and rebuilding it. Replace the gasket, if necessary.

Alternatively, you could replace the whole multiport, but unscrewing the multiport might damage the underdrain laterals if the multiport has locked onto the standpipe.
