Finally have a new filled gunite Pebbletec Pebblesheen pool!
It's day 4 and wondering if its ok to start adding chlorine via tablets in the skimmer? NPC startup says "pre-diluted chlorine" can be added but all I have from builder is a bucket of tablets.

FC -not tested yet
CC -not tested yet
pH - 7.2
TA -90
CH - 200
CYA - not tested yet

Brushing 3x/day
11K gal, water temp: 58degrees F

Thanks!

Is the builder supposed to do start up maintenance?

We do not recommend adding any chemical via the skimmer. Especially tablets/pucks/trichlor. They are very acidic and can damage the plastic parts, etc. Always use a floater if you are temporarily using trichlor.

Yes, I am following the acid start up method and also using the Pebbletec startup procedures/levels.
Pool math says to add 2qts, 5oz of bleach (6%). Should that be all at once or pace it out over a few days?

You do not have any CYA in the water so the chlorine will burn off pretty quick. At what point does your procedure allow you to add CYA?

I am not sure you would want to add any chlorine until you start adding CYA.

OK -- great. Our plaster start up (I linked to it above) states that an Acid Start up is best done by the pool builder. So that is why I was asking.

Just add the chlorine (enough for 3 ppm FC) in to the pool at the return. Have your pump running at the highest rpm you can. Use your brush right after to vigorously mix the area.

Add the CYA by using what we call the sock method. Get an old sock (no holes) and put the measured amount of CYA you need. Tie the sock closed and either suspend it in front of a return (hang it from your brush pole works with something weighted on the deck) OR if it still allows flow thru the skimmer, place the sock in the skimmer. Every 15/20 minutes give the sock a squeeze to speed up the process. Please DO NOT follow the directions on the container of CYA to just pour it into the skimmer and don't just toss the sock in the pool as the CYA is acidic and can bleach/stain pool finishes.
