Stupid Polaris / Manual vac help

We have a polaris vacuum (360, I believe) that came with our pool when we bought the house (previous owner left it for us).

I HATE that thing. It tangles, it stops, it gets stuck. We have a large pool, about 36' by 18' by 9' deep. Polaris will never clean the steps and requires more work than just vacuuming it manually. With the polaris I have to keep going out there to untangle it and redirect it.

I bought all the bits to just vacuum manually, which I do when I am swimming anyway - except now, I need some kind of in-skimmer-basket attachment so I don't suck up a ton of leaves into the pool lines. We have a LOT of leaves from trees in the neighbors' yards (small lots, in town, mature neighborhood).I have scooped so many leaves out I'm developing Popeye arms and that's not a good look on me, LOL.

But now it's also COLD, and the stupid polaris 360 is still a POS, and I am looking for a replacement or at least some recommendations. (We don't close the pool in the winter. We live in Georgia, and it's only ever closed about 4 months anyway, and it's as much work keeping the water and leaves out of the top of the cover than it is keeping them out of the pool itself.)

So, I need to know 1. what the basket attachment thing would be called so I can buy one that allows me to hook up the manual vacuum and use that without clogging the pool lines and 2. what I can replace the older polaris with that won't require a lot of changes in pump and attachment (new polaris, maybe?) but won't suck as much. Or, if you will, will suck better.

Here you go Kim. Buy a [emoji880]. But you will still have to brush the steps. Dolphin M500. Or an S series which are a little less powerful.

There are long owner threads on both at the top of this section.

If you are inclined to spend some dough. Most are thrilled with them.

Hey there Aichambaye- always good to have another Georgian in the house (woot! woot!) Welcome!

You're pool is huge at 36x18...are you sure about that 15k gallons? I sort of estimate it at about 24k.... trying to picture a doughboy that big? Would love to see pics.

I'm also a huge fan of robots. They are almost the standard now whereas all those other types are so..."yesterday" y'know?

Robots also don't add debris to your filter. Spend enough on one and you can even have a handy remote control.

HI!!!!! GA is a great place! I was born there and live next door in FL now!

Here is a vacuum attachment idea for you:

Saying that I am willing to bet you will get a bunch of people jumping to say "Buy a robot". There are many threads about them. I will let you do a search in the white box at the top of this page so you can see what will fit in your wallet.

Thanks Kim! That seems to fit our pool basket.

I didn't put that 15k or doughboy in there. I don't even know what a "doughboy" is.

Will those robots suck up leaves? It seems that everyone is just talking about how much sand and pebbles they take out. We have pine straw and oak leaves.

Yup, leaves are no problem for my robot (Dolphin Discovery)! Acorns and other small bits are just appetizers for the meal of leaves when my robot is in service.

Addendum- Website gone Wonky I guess? Putting someone elves signature on your post... I'll report it to the head hamster minder.

I need to get Matt over here to talk to you about his leaf eating robot! MATT??? Oh Matt.............Want to talk robots? It may take him a little while as he has four littles to play Santa to so............

Anyway, Danny (pooldv) is the true leaf-master with his S200 (brand named the "Discovery" by Doheny). But any of the S series bots should make short work of leafs and pine needles. I would be sure to use the coarse screens in the filter basket as you want to give the robot as much throughput as possible so saving the ultra-fine pleated filters is better for later use.

If you're looking for a better way to clean, go with a robot. The latest versions of the S series by Dolphin come with swivel cords now so tangled cords are a thing of the past. Also, the higher end unit like my S300i comes with full Smartphone controls. You'll want to use something like the "Ultra Clean" mode on a big pile of leaves but you can only access that feature in higher level S series.

Call around to pool shops in your area and ask them if they provide any robots for demo purposes. Several of the shops in my area do that and it can be very helpful in determining which unit you like the best.

Another option is a 360 to 280 conversion. I'm not one to badmouth a product, but the 360 is the weakest of main line cleaners. No pool pro likes to see a 360 when they walk into the backyard.
A conversion would involve adding a timer, a booster pump and the 280 (or other pressured cleaner). I have done this several times with customers who were all very satisfied with the results.
If you decide to go with a robot, make sure it has top access to the debris bag also check for weight. Some are cumbersome to get in and out of the pool, it gets old fast. Overall, robots are a lot better than in the past and seem to be improving.
