Is it okay to leave algae under new liner install?

Hi everybody,
If you look back at my other posts and problems you'll see that I had a two trees come down and damage my pool house and pool back in March and April of this year.
It's been a fiasco with my insurance company and then trades people since trying to get things repaired. I thank all of you for your support through my chaos with this situation.

TODAY the 3rd pool builder should be coming to finally install my new liner. He actually is sub contracted by the pool store here. He's very nice but I want you, my experts to reassure me that what he wants to do is okay.

Due to the fact that my pool was finally drained in May, it deteriorated under the liner. This is what I was told by this PB and the pool store contractor. Lots of rain water got in under the liner and along the sides due to the sides being cut for measuring for new liner. Pool has actually been pumped out a total of three times with various amounts of water in it. Center of floor is in good shape, no algae or stains. Walls have red dirt from wash over or possibly ants but only one spot of rust which was about 4 inch circle. They sanded and sprayed with rust oleum.
They cleaned all the walls, scraped the floor very well and hosed it down. They put in a good days work doing this plus patched all the areas that they scraped out. The holes you will see in the photos were mostly scraped out by them because they were "loose", needed to be new material. I felt good about how thorough they were being.
Until I asked about the green and black mold that is. The main gentleman told me both are actually algae and if the sun was out and hot it would have been gone by the end of the day. Alas, but it was only 68 degrees, cloudy and beginning to sprinkle. I said I'd like to bleach it, he said it was fine to cover it with my new liner and it would not go through the liner into the water. Oh, and he said it was okay to put the liner over the wet floor that the wet would soak in.

I searched on the forum and found only two older posts similar to this situation. One of them the poster's PB did bleach or treat the algae before dropping the liner.

I've been through 7 mos of non sense waiting for this liner install and a whole summer without a pool, I sure don't want it to be done wrong.

Pictures are below. First pic is how pool has sat for 5 weeks waiting for them to fit us into schedule.
The others are work in progress showing the algae on floor, damage to floor and it being patched and foam to walls.
I don't remember if the shot showing the rust is in one of these. The red dirt spills over at each seam and can be seen in some.

My question is: Is it okay for them to put my new liner over this black and green algae and onto the damp bottom/floor?

Temp should hit 70 today with 70's next few days and rain.

Thank you as always,
Joan

I hope I hear from some of you soon because they just pulled in my driveway. I will question them heavily again on covering the algae. They still have patching to do before they can actually install the liner.
It also rained again this morning so there is a little water in the hopper to be pumped out.

I can't believe this is okay. My last liner was put in, in the spring when these issues didn't exist.

I don’t know much about vinyl pools since I am a plaster pool owner... but I would get rid of every last algae cell and piece of organic matter in my pool and not leave it over the winter to go dormant only to come back again next season...my opinion.

I fully agree Hidden River. PB says difference is algae is UNDER liner and won't get IN pool.

I told him today when he came to put the liner in, that I was still worried about the algae and wanted it removed before the liner was put in. He said he promised me it would not hurt the liner or get into the pool. He has installed over more than this and its been fine. The sun had come out and he said the sun would take care of some of it if not all of it before the liner was put in.

The sun did fade some of it before the liner went in but not all of it. I took pics as they were installing. It's filling now. I'm to shut off water at a level he marked near the shallow so he can cut out the steps, do skimmer plate and jets tomorrow. Liner looks good. Some wrinkles but he says they will pull out with water weight because they are packing wrinkles. He says the liner is an excellent fit just a bit hart to get in track because it's a 28 mil wall and the outdoor temp is only 70-71 degrees so it's hard to stretch it.

It's in so we'll see what happens.

Thank you,
Joan

Veccster,

I am so thankful for you comment. I could almost cry I'm so thankful.
I have worried so much over the algae being covered up and possibly coming through the liner, especially the black algae.
This has been months of worry and issues all because of trees falling and causing damage.

I wondered with so many views of the post if no one had an opinion.

Thank you again,
Joan

You've had one heck of a year with that pool. I remember your initial post with pictures of the trees laying in the pool....and the various companies telling you how they plan to remove - or wouldn't remove at all. Glad you're finally on track to getting things back in shape.

Certain organics can cause stains that will show through the liner. What's there probably won't go away or die off. My opinion is that it would have been better to remove the organics. It might be a mix of algae, bacteria, mold or fungus.

Hopefully, it won't migrate through the liner, but it might.

What are the black stains on the floor of my liner and how do I get rid of them? | Inground Liners Blog

Joan - Don't panic. It will be fine. Even in that article just posted, the concern there is not some residual algae being covered up, but a swamp-like area that is actively breeding microorganisms. That does not sound like your situation at all.

If you were fine before the trees came down, you will be fine now.

If the algae shows up then just treat it like you would any algae. Even though it would have been better to remove it “just in case” like Veccster said it won’t be exposed to light, won’t get oxygen (at night when algae respire) so won’t have what is needed to grow and live and should not be a problem. You have your defense if there is a problem—bottles of chlorine from Walmart!

Wow Everybody :) --- You all made me feel better for sure.

You pretty much answered questions I've been wondering about. I didn't know if other pool builders covered this kind of stuff up or not. The article links were scary but didn't sound like my floor. My nastiness was on top of the floor, not coming from underground thank goodness. I'm smiling and trying to keep thinking good thoughts.

The liner looks great!! I have new fabric for outdoor cushions and pillows so I hope to get those done this winter.

I saw this liner in a thread that Swampwoman has on the forum called something like Liner Round Up where posters send in pics of their liners for members to see and help them decide on liner replacements or install.

My husband and I really like this one and hope it's going to be as durable as the last one taken out by the tree.

Back to chasing leaves and sadly chasing iron from somewhere. When I started to balance and added chlorine I got this. I thought new fill would solve that old problem but iron was lurking somewhere.
I have more Metal Magic on order so expect to have blue water again soon.

Thank all of you for your concern and input. You did relieve my mind and gave me helpful information.

I tried to edit and take off the tacked on pic at the end but I couldn't get it off. My apologies for it hanging on at the bottom.

It's hard to say how long it really took. There was a lot of fill and stop...fill and stop. PB did the cut outs piece meal. Took him 3 days. He wanted the water a certain water level for step cut out etc.

We have great water pressure. I tried to add up the three days of stop and start and it only took about 20-22 hours with 2 hoses running and another 9 hours with 1 hose. That may be off a little but it's close. Last liner we did was filled by the next afternoon.

I'm ready to do a Metal Magic commercial :) Maybe they'll give me a lifetime supply of the stuff.

I had one bottle of MM in the pool house so I put it in my green pool to get things started while waiting for my order of more to get here. Directions say one quart per 10,000 gallons ( I have 34,000) . I've put in 1 quart and waited to see what it would do in the past on my old liner and it worked so I was hopeful this time with my new liner.

One quart of Metal Magic and 24 hours later, my pool is back to blue and new :)

Veccster, do you have photos of your pool somewhere? It sounds beautiful and I would love to see it!

Hi Joan, thanks for the info. Can't do it from my phone but I'll post a link to pictures here soon.

We finally had concrete poured today to patch the pad that was ripped up to repair a leaking pipe. It's been a headache since the pool was installed last spring. A lot of water, a lot of chemicals and a lot of stress....but it's finally over. Now just need to repair the yard AGAIN.

Glad your headache is over as well.
