Pool is in and being filled. Next is setting forms and pouring concrete deck. The deck will be tied into an existing concrete patio that is ~4" thick. There will be a step down from the existing patio to the new deck/patio. I am not sure the total drop until they bring in the level but it will be at least one normal step height or two shorter steps. What is the best way to connect to the existing patio so that the gravel and fill under the existing patio does not show? I am thinking something like a curb. Builder mentioned removing some of the fill under the existing patio and fill with concrete but wouldn't there then be a crack/line between existing patio and new deck? Have to also worry about freeze/thaw cycle in Ohio.

photos are 1. facing the pool from the existing patio and 2. Facing existing patio from pool.

Pour the top step tread even with the existing patio grade and step down from there. No need to tie the two slabs together, in fact you should use an expansion or caulked isolation joint there anyway. The contrast in color aids in identifying that there is a step
