So much bleach!

Hi All,

I'm new to TFP this summer and I've been trying to bring back a 2 years neglected pool!

I have been doing the SLAM method for over 2 weeks, but honestly, I was working/away from home most days for 10 hours and was finding it hard to keep the chlorine up at shock level. I have been home for 4 days this holiday weekend and have been consistently checking, brushing, and cleaning the filters. It's still not holding shock level for long. I just tested CYA at 0! That's a problem! Added 7 lbs CYA using the sock method and I hope I see some improvement soon! I've been buying 10 jugs of bleach daily for 2 weeks now!

Before Slam:

PH: 7.5
FC: 0 (now ranging from 14.5-24)
CC: 0
CYA: 0 (adding 7 lbs)
Salt water Generator is currently OFF

60 minutes ago I tested at 19.5 ppm chlorine. Now at 21.5.

I have noticed a slight change since Friday. I can almost see the third step on the stairs!

I'm running out of patience and money!

Thank you for any advice you can give me!

Happy 4th everyone!

Welcome to TFP!

Going this long without CYA was certainly causing you to lose a lot of chlorine to the Sun. It looks like you have made some pretty good progress and now that you're going to get some protection for the chlorine into the water hopefully the amount of bleach you need to buy will lower.

What kind of filter do you have and what maintenance have you been doing to it?

Don't feel bad brother my pool is in the same boat mine looks identical to yours and I work 10 hours a day as well I ended up having to put about six bags of shock in my pool every night but I also did not add through the skimmer I found that it helped me more to mix in a bucket with some pool water and then slowly disperse around the edges of the pool taking my brush and stiring the water to help it circulate through!

6 bags of shock everyday is going to really mess up your pool chemistry quickly. Either your CYA or CH is going to be sky high and require water replacement.

Good Evening,

Here's my pool tonight on the left. Yesterday on the right.

It's slowly getting there! Back to work today. Was at 19ppm FC at noon, but when I got home around 6:00 was down to 6ppm. Had to buy 10 more bottles of bleach on the way home today and I predict another stop at the grocery store tomorrow!

Any tips on how to manage being away from the pool for long stretches at a time during this SLAM process?

Have a good night everyone!

Brenda

Brenda I feel your pain of the long stretches and not being able to add bleach more frequently. Looks like it is coming along. Your signature does not specify the size of your filter, but 24k gallons I suspect its large. Keep the FC high and your filter working as good as possible, other than that it really is just "maintain" until it clears.

Hi!

My pool is looking more blue than green tonight!

Today Wednesday Tuesday

I wasn't able to test all day again. The FC was down to 2.5 when I got home!! Luckily, it's almost the weekend and I'll be able to keep the shock level up!

Would it make sense to add salt to start the SWG at this point? I figure that it can't hurt especially where I'm not home for long stretches during the day.
Is there any reason not to add salt tomorrow?

Thanks! Have a good night!

Brenda

That's pretty impressive for three days.

You can add the salt and start the SWG... But remember they only produce a fixed amount of chlorine so if you're using it during a slam you are shortening it's life. Just remember to turn it off when you perform the OCLT at the end of your slam.

Now that it's starting to turn more blue, you'll probably start using progressively less chlorine to maintain your shock level.

Friday Update!

Daily progress since Tuesday of this week. Today I can almost see the the bottom of the shallow end of the pool!
*Only bought 8 jugs of bleach today!
I decided to not add the salt just yet - will wait to see where I am after the weekend!

Thank you for all the encouragement!

Brenda

Good Evening,

Busy weekend! I have been keeping up with the pool though! I tried the OCLT test overnight last night and the pool lost 5 ppm so the SLAM continues! I'm so tired of the SLAM but I can't deny that it's working - I just have to keep reminding myself how bad the pool was (I don't have pictures of when it was a swamp-with frogs!!) Tonight I can just barely make out the vacuum in the bottom of the deep end - fingers crossed that I'm swimming this weekend!
Here are my progress pics!

Pictures start on Tuesday July 4th through today July 10th. This wasn't where I started though- I had been working on the pool half-heartedly for 2 weeks before I started taking pictures. I have been following the SLAM rules since the Friday June 30.

The (deep) end is in sight!

Good night!

Hi!

No pictures today, I've been quite busy! BUT....MY POOL IS SPARKLING CLEAR!!!!!!!:kim:
I'm doing the OCLT tonight and if it passes we'll add salt and start up the SWG!!! I'm so excited!
It looks amazing and I would jump right in, but the temperature outside is 57 degrees! brrr

I will post pictures tomorrow! I didn't think I'd ever see the bottom of this pool again!
The SLAM process works - if you stick with the plan and don't give up when you're not seeing improvement!
It's been 10 days of dedicated, blind faith work on this pool but now it's crystal clear!

Thank you TFP!

Brenda
