Thanks, everyone for your help. I've stopped the leak for now, but will probably switch out the plumbing for a more solid joint like ajw22 recommends. I'll let you all know how it works out.

The contact surface appears flat and clean. The coupling seems weird. The guy I bought the house from did a lot of his own work. Is this the best way to couple the PVC pipe with the metal?
