I finally got the folks at Pentair to tell me the problem was most likely the thermistor. (Previously, all they would say is that I needed to contact their local authorized service center.) I replaced the thermistor this morning and all is well! Thanks for all the helpful advice!

Thanks, tgramm! I just pulled the side panel off and the thermostat looks very simple to replace. I'll try it and let you know what happens. btw, I'm not getting any error codes at all; never have. That's one of the reasons I've been so confused by this.
