New numbers - can't keep FC levels and have high phosphates

Lithium hypochlorite is fine to use, as it adds nothing but chlorine (same as bleach/chlorinating liquid). Lithium is a very expensive source of chlorine, but if you have it, by all means use it up. In your 28,000 gallon pool, each 8 oz trichlor tablet will add 2.0 ppm FC, and 1.2 ppm cya.

New numbers - can't keep FC levels and have high phosphates

smuggs, First of all, forget everthing Leslie's told you. Don't use them for testing. Get your own high quality test kit, and test your own water. Trouble Free Pool sells a good test kit. Then, stock up on liquid chlorine (bleach from the supermarket, or chlorinating liquid from the pool...

lowering PH with out lowing TA

That's odd. Sodium bicarbonate should raise the TA by 30 points, while raising the pH by just .1. Are you sure you are using sodium bicarbonate, and not soda ash or something else?

how in the world does this vacume thingy work.

Rollin Thunder, If you have too much suction, the vacuum head can "latch on" to the liner, which can rip a hole in the liner. I know, because it happend to me once. :grrrr: You should be able to adust your valve(s) to get the suction just right.

    DE Filter

    1. Turn the pump off. 2. Make sure the backwash hose is attached, then unroll it (assuming you have a flexible backwash hose). 3. Set valve(s) to backwash and turn the pump on and let it run for a couple of minutes. 4. Turn the pump off. Set valve(s) to rinse. Turn the pump on and let it run for...

    how is my pool?

Your pH is indeed high. As the pool cures, the pH is going to rise. I could take several weeks, even months for it to cure, so until then you will be adding acid frequently. As far as the FC, I'm not sure, but I don't think it's too high. Hopefully some SWG users will be along to shed more light...

Can you get algae if FC is within target?

OneMom, If it's slimy, surely it's algae. Pucks made by HTH do have copper in them. You can buy a test kit for copper, but most people use the local pool store for metal testing. Swimming in copper can cause your fingernails/toenails to turn green, and blonde hair will turn green. Other than...

First Trip to the Pool Store

Without knowing the pool volume, impossible to say. Regardless, your cya (stabilizer) is WAY too high. Do you trust the pool store readings? If that cya is true, you really need to drain at least half of your pool and refill.

Do I need to lower my PH or increase my FC?

Maybe you need to filter a little longer each day. The borates should prevent algae. Still, I would target FC just a bit higher to have a little wiggle room. You should not let the FC drop to less than 2.0 ppm, otherwise you will be flirting with bacteria. This is all assuming the pool is a...

Do I need to lower my PH or increase my FC?

Your pH is at the high end, so I would recommend lowering it. As far as FC, we would need to know the cyanuric acid level, as that determines the proper FC level. EDIT: Opps my bad, you did post the cya. You do need to up the FC. See the chlorine/cya chart in the stickie section.

what do you guys think of this filter system

DE filters do not use cartridges, they have grids which are coated with DE. Cartridge filters do not use DE, instead, they have replaceable filter elements, much like an air filter.

    Test kit tip

MeSue, I can relate to the humidity. Good tip, I'll try that. I rinse the scoop off ater every use. Also I have three scoops (having ordered more powder), so I cut the scoop end off of one, and use the paddle end to level the powder. I hope this makes sense 8)

    Water Loss?

Under the same conditions (wind, heat, sunlight, etc) water evaporates at the same rate regardless of the size of the body of water. So if a pool loses 1/4" a day to evaporation, the bucket will also lose 1/4" a day. Fill a bucket with water. Measure and record how much water the bucket is...

    TA rising along with pH?

Also the borates will reduce chlorine demand. Producing too much chlorine would be a nice "problem" to have
