That looks familiar. We retired to Florida 3 years ago from Marquette. We also had a grackle war. I don't have any success strategy to add. We have a lanai in Florida that keeps grackles away (yes, we have them here, too).

Solar covers do not heat the water from the sun. They prevent or reduce the cooling of the water due to evaporation. I'm unsure if they reduce the breakdown of FC, but if they do, it's probably due to the filtering of the sun's UV rays by the plastic the cover is made out of. I don't think...
