I have a Hayward DE6020 DE filter. I replace the whole fin assembly because I feared the old assembly was leaking DE. I have a lot of Green algae but when I clean I see white specks. I have cloudy water waiting for Dry acid according to Leslie's. I assume once the water is clear I may see a clue.

Now, I would substitute a portable cartridge filter instead of the sand filter. The portable cartridge filter would be quicker to clean than the large DE filter

Two years ago I had mud running into my pool. I flocked. I got it out by using a robotic cleaner. I am still using the same filters on my tiger shark. I did not get burned by filtering.

My Tiger shark robotic picks up the debris. However it has a small filter area. If I use an above ground cartridge system it would have a much larger filter area and I would not have to clear as often. Also I used a liquid floc. Years ago I used alum which caused quite a mess.

Tough to refill water lost in a 45,000 pool when I'm on a marginal well. I may just buy a small cartridge filter system similar to a dolly vacuum to remove debris on the bottom.
