How damaging is softened water to the pump and heater?

We have well water, and hence it's very hard. I'm able to fill our spa from our softened water, which is what I've done the past couple of times. Even then, we still have an iron issue that I plan on addressing. From my understanding, too low of Hardness can cause foaming and damage to the pump...

40 AMP breaker for 50 AMP recommended

Thanks, all. I'll confirm the size of the wire - both runs - and either see if it trips, or try to figure the amount of draw. It will be both the heater and circulation. One source said it's 2 motors; another said 3. I hate to ask here, but since I have people responding and still none in my...

Remove bottom pan to clean it/bottom of spa?

Some more info. I now see why I was cautioned against removing the bottom pan: see the attached photo. Lots of insulation seeming to be attached to the pan. Thoughts?

40 AMP breaker for 50 AMP recommended

Gotcha; thanks. I need to confirm whether they may have used #6 gauge, despite using 40a breakers. Probably not, though. But if so, then I could swap in a 50amp breaker. If not, keep the 40amp, and see if it trips or not under load. Thanks again.

40 AMP breaker for 50 AMP recommended

Thanks. And fwiw, he's not a licensed electrician, though was an assistant for awhile and has been in this business for quite awhile. Unfortunately, my main breaker box has a lot of unlabeled breakers (they added on a second one, which is well-labeled). I do see a pair of 40 amps (grouped as...

40 AMP breaker for 50 AMP recommended

I just bought a used Down East Exeter ('03 - '05) that calls for a 50 AMP breaker. The manual says it has 2 pumps, but some spec listing online says 3. It's not the SE version. The prior owners of our house had a spa and it has a 40 AMP GFCI already installed. The pool/hot tub guy who's...

Remove bottom pan to clean it/bottom of spa?

I just bought a spa (hot tub) - Down East Exeter - which is 14 years old. Needs repairs due to mice chewing wires. We had to put it on its side in order to get to my patio, and still have it on its side since there's a ridiculous, incredible urine(?) odor. Supposedly from the mice that lived in...

Testing Bromide Reserve, frequency of adding Sodium Bromide to spa

Wonderful, thanks for that info. I didn't realize the shocking was needed that often due to use.

Testing Bromide Reserve, frequency of adding Sodium Bromide to spa

I opened a 192 gallon spa last week, and started on the 3-step process. I shocked the new fill, then added appropriate amount of sodium bromide to establish a reserve. The shock (bleach) raised the free chlorine appropriately, but the Bromine tabs I'd ordered didn't arrive until today. Since...

    repair leaking pipe from skimmer

Thanks for the feedback. That product, Crystal, looks to be what I was thinking of doing, and now that I think of it, as the skimmer suction can be adjusted with valves at the pump anyway, having the diameter smaller shouldn't matter (or at least shouldn't be prohibitive). No installers listed...

    repair leaking pipe from skimmer

I have a leak in the pipe that goes down from the skimmer - likely where it joins a few inches (2-8 or 10) down, according to the repair guy I had check it out. In the past I've had leaks in the skimmer, and the last time partly down the pipe, and have fixed (or tried) with epoxy and...

    Repair fiberglass in/around skimmer

Going to go with the Goop for Plumbing. Turns out Shoe Goo is made by the same company, and though they appear to be the same, there are subtle differences. If anyone's interested, per the company: Amazing GOOP® and Craft GOOP® contain a thinner formula for precise, detailed work. Wood &...

    Repair fiberglass in/around skimmer

Sorry, one more question. Not surprisingly, starting to get algae on the sides. As my water level is below the skimmer line, I can't circulate it. Would pouring a jug around the edge without being able to circulate it do more harm to the fiberglass surface than good. Am I better off just letting...
