New Plaster Startup NPC vs Bicarb vs Orenda

Thanks for that info, it certainly makes more sense now. I think there was some etching in spots, so what you said makes sense. Bad plaster job and initially aggressive water combined here to produce bad results. I have read the article you linked. It all makes sense, but I feel it's going to...

New Plaster Startup NPC vs Bicarb vs Orenda

That was the conclusion of onBalance. But there seems to be a conflict here. On one hand, the conclusion was that the installer was to blame for poor technique and the startup chemistry could not have caused the issues. But on the other hand, I read discussions from onBalance and Orenda that say...

New Plaster Startup NPC vs Bicarb vs Orenda

I am doing the startup, which are my questions. For background, PB is a large company who does hundreds, if not thousands of plaster jobs a year, so I doubt I will have the same crew. As a homeowner and forum jockey not in the industry, I don't think it is realistic for me to micromanage the...

New Plaster Startup NPC vs Bicarb vs Orenda

They are chipping out old plaster and replacing with new.

New Plaster Startup NPC vs Bicarb vs Orenda

Had my pool replastered last year with plain, white plaster and had significant issues with mottling and discoloration (see here). I followed NPC startup last time per PB recommendation. After a winter of back and forth, PB has agreed to redo the job, which is scheduled to begin at the end of...

    New Plaster Problems

Update: Discussed situation with PB and they are confident acid wash and chlorine wash will bring the plaster to a good appearance with minimal negative impact on the life of the plaster. Their logic is that the grey is moisture trapped in the plaster and the acid will open the pores to allow...

    New Plaster Problems

One on left is before. At first glance they appear the same, but if you look close the one on the right has some spots that got lighter. I would say a minor improvement and not nearly good enough. I'm going to call PB on monday and see if I can get them to redo the whole job based on this evidence.

    New Plaster Problems

Here are the before and after pics for the test acid wash on the top step. Not much of a difference. Side note- I noticed the grey spots are smooth, white regions are rough.

    New Plaster Problems

Here is pic of the prep prior to plaster. I tried to scratch at the grey with a finger nail and it doesn't come off. I suppose I could try a scotch brite pad or steel wool, or maybe even sandpaper to see if it comes off in a small spot. I like the idea of trying the acid on a step while it is...

    New Plaster Problems

Sorry, I didn't get the brand name. Only got this one pic when they were installing. It looked white for a while. The grey starting showing itself in the weeks and months over the summer. Was there anything with my chemistry that could have caused this?
