Well I changed the lid and joint and it did the trick! The cleaner is currently happy moving around the bottom of the pool. Doesn't seem to go up the sides, but that's a challenge for another day! Thanks Kimkats :)

Ok, yes it's an above ground pool. The pressure guage is either broken or at maximum all the time (have done several backwashes and rinse cycles). Maybe I need to replace the sand?
