I've hunted around on the site and have not found an explanation of the exact nature of the relationship between the CYA in the pool and the loss of chlorine levels when the sun is out. I read that if my CYA is at 50, chlorine won't be lost to the sun. And I see this on one of the PoolSchool...

We didn't lose it all to the leak. We've been discharging 4" or so every time we clean it, which is often. I won't drain any more, since I anticipate more cleaning and the leak hasn't been fixed yet. Replenishing the water after the vacuuming to waste and the backwash results in the CYA level...

Yes, we lowered about 14 inches. And we've vacuumed to waste. And then there is a leak. We're down to 60 now.

Here is a not very good one, with hose in pool and pool ready to be vacuumed. But I'll send it while I'm here reading the forum and maybe send a better one later.

I did do the dulted test, and the CYA is now down to 80. The pool is clear, and we continue to keep the chlorine at the SLAM level. It only required about half a bottle of bleach overnight, so we're making significant progress.

I did do it earlier, and CYA was at 140, as I recall. CYA levels is below 80 now. The pool is almost clear, and we continue slamming, at present checking every few hours and adding chlorine. It will be interesting to see how far the chlorine level drops overnight.

The pool is looking much better--it's such a good feeling to actually know what's going on with it! Very reassuring. We're vacuuming a bunch of stuff to discharge now, then will do another water reduction, check the water, add stuff, and wait til morning. Our pool has also always been sparkling...

Thank you all again so much! I'm looking forward to being algae-free with a low CYA. I hadn't thought about tablets for vacation. But then, we haven't taken a vacation for a long while, either. I can't imagine what kind of chlorine level was needed for a CYA of 350!!

We have probably been adding a couple inches of water a week to the pool over the past several weeks, because of evaporation and a probable leak. Leak source is not yet discovered, but we'll deal with it (thanks to good info on this site regarding how to attack it) once the algae issue is under...
