Dave, To make the matter even more confusing, I went to Wal-Mart last night and purchased an HTH 3-Way test kit and the pH was spot on 7.8...which is entirely inconsistent with both of the pool store readings? Also, I did make sure I was using the proper phenol red with each comparator block...

I plan to put CYA in a sock this evening and imagine it will be gone from the sock by tomorrow sometime with a little coaxing. Can I go ahead and start shocking my green pool this weekend...or will I backwash out too much of the CYA by starting this weekend? I was really hoping to get started...

Shouldn't be the case...I've used two different brands of the 5-Drop pH tester...Taylor R-0004 and an off-brand from the Pool Shop. The results were the same.
