I have a hayward sand filter pump and have been running 24/7 the past couple of years. Someone mentioned to me that I need to put it on a timer. Does anyone run a timer on their filter pump and if so how many times a day should I set it to come on and how long should it run on each cycle? Thanks...

Yes I have a main drain in the bottom of the deep end in addition to the skimmer. I have a shut off valve on the main drain line at the sand filter and also a shut off valve on the skimmer line at the sand filter as well. Currently both shut off valves are wide open.

Ok thanks for the pic help, we will try it again. I tried to vaccum it some this afternoon but didnt get very far. Impeller kept clogging up on the pump every couple of minutes, but going to keep working on it. Thanks for all the help.
