Pool equipment update

And....once you get the setting for the current season dialed in, your need for testing goes way down too! The only routine chemical you may need to add on a weekly/semi-monthly basis: muriatic acid.
No chlorine of any kind. When all is balanced, no need to even have any on hand. I bought 2 cases of liquid last spring, and have now aged them to almost 0% concentration. My tablets are 3 yrs old (from prior to salt conversion), and only used in a floater if I go away for a week or more.
Yes, you will have to add CYA perhaps once a year. Maybe deal with high TA (or very rarely low TA) a couple of times a year. Salt once or twice a year.
CH only if your fill water is extremely low in it.
Finally, you can run your pump 24/7 at a very low speed, which saves massive amounts of electricity - so your bill will be far lower.

Pesh, do you like lugging 1000 jugs ? The IC60 makes about 1000 jugs worth of FC.

I absolutely LOVE *not lugging 1000 jugs*.

It happens to be considerably cheaper in the long run to not lug jugs, but i would legit pay more if I had to. Lots more. But Yay!!! it's actually cheaper.

OK, I'll back off from my Rainbows stated above a tiny bit. A SWCG does stop making Cl below about 50-60 degrees. So if your water temp drops below, you'll have to rely on liquid. But at colder temps, and much less sunlight, you'll need at lot less than at other times. And for some, the electrical install part can drive the price higher than they like - but in your case with everything else you will be doing, the installation will be a snap.

In talking with some pool builders, my pool has limestone coping and a natural stone waterfall. I was told that SWCG would erode the stone over time and create other issues. Also, we do get cold water temps during winter, like right now my Intellicenter says water temp is 42F.

Perhaps, SWCG is just not right for me.

@Jimrahbe I agree. I truly appreciate the forum and learning from knowledgable people, like yourself. I didnt build my pool, it came with my house. However, if I did, I would've used materials to support the ability to have SWCG. I'm convinced of its benefits thanks to you and others.

Ask Pentair.

Sadly, Pentair was not much help. They only confirmed that rodent-related damage is not covered under warranty. But modifying their poor design to prevent rodents may or may not void the warranty :(

I am preparing to replace my 10+ year old MasterTemp 400 with a new MasterTemp 400. My supply house has given me two options. The standard 400 and the "upgraded" 400-EC with higher grade metal components. I'm curious if the upgraded (more expensive) EC version is really worth it?

I think you mean MasterTemp 400HD.

HD has a cupronickel heat exchanger, which is less efficient.

Heavy-duty (HD) cupro-nickel heat exchanger 82% efficient.

There is also a MasterTemp 400 ASME, which is a commercial version.

TradeGrade products are intended to be exclusive to retail stores (brick & mortar), pool builders, or pool service companies. Inground TradeGrade products are backed by full parts and labor coverage. View the list of TradeGrade Products.

@JamesW do you know if buying "trade grade" thru my local Pool Installer (one-man-shop) would be eligible for the 3-year bundle warranty from Pentair? My installer worked for a large Austin-area Pool Service Company for 10+ years and in the industry for 30 years. So he knows what he's doing. Just hope an invoice from him showing all the Pentair products (filter, heater, pump, lights, etc.) with installation date will suffice for Pentair 3-year Warranty.

@JamesW based on the above, do you think installing stainless steel screens, like those from mkratproofing.com, would void the MasterTemp warranty? They are installed on the outside of the until and just screw thru the plastic shell to attach to keep rodents out.

It depends on exactly what the warranty claim is.

The assigned service tech has to determine if the malfunction is due to defects in workmanship and/or materials or due to some aspect outside the control of the manufacturer.

Sometimes it's not clear and it is decided by someone's opinion of what caused the problem.
