Hi TFP,

I’m having some difficulty with yellow “powder” in the pool. This has been coming and going over the past few weeks but now it’s making the water cloudy and the yellow stuff keeps accumulating.
33k gal
Alk:120
Ph:7.5
Cya: 50-60 ( not sure how it got up so high, different story…stabilizer only was added 1 mo ago. No stabilizer tabs.)
Fc 30 slamming for two days, 8ppm lost at night
Cc:0
Vacuuming to waste
Filter and skimmer socks were bright yellow. Filter was acid washed but has some yellow stains after drying in the sun for several days.

It is algae.

Follow the SLAM process. Print it out and keep it with you...Link-->SLAM Process

You are not following the process if your FC is 30. Re-read the process. At CYA of 60, slam target FC is 24.

Clean the filters and note clean pressure. When filter pressure rises 25%, clean the cartridges again.

Thanks! Mustard algae or just regular? I’m very familiar with the SLAM. I can’t get FC exactly there without a precise dose (versus gallon method). Is FC over target an issue? And why would that be an issue? Just curious…

Likely just algae.

Download pool math and use it for dosing amounts. Put in test result, 24FC for target and % concentration of the liquid chlorine, it will tell you how much to add.

Again, re-read the slam process. Print it out. SLAM process clearly indicates to use pool math.

Dosing over slam level can cause damage, and is not safe to swim above SLAM level FC.

Okay thanks. I appreciate the help.

Yes, that is exactly what mustard algae does.

There are two types of mustard algae.

One type is the yellow dust that most people associate with mustard algae.

That type is not really a problem for a normal SLAM.

This type is very resistant to chlorine and it takes about 60% FC/CYA to effectively deal with.

This type is usually a mix of brown, green and yellow and it mostly stays on the floor like sand.

Thanks everyone. It cleared up after SLAM @ 20 ppm Cl after 2-3 days. Not sure if it was mustard algae or not, but it was yellow and “dusty”. Most of the deep end liner was “dirty” with it when I scrubbed. The substance would accumulate in the calm areas that I have trouble circulating and the ramp transition from the 9ft deep end.
